Dell 2007/2407 still have banding issues.

Ridiculous, considering it was supposed to be fixed in the A02 revision. I got mine yesterday and displaying a gradient in photoshop is like a flashback to 1988 monitors. It's jagged and banded like crazy.

Don't buy one.

Thanks for the info. You're pretty sure this affects all of them?

I'm in the market for a 24" LCD...If you've seen a 2405fpw, would you consider the 2407 to be an improvement, about the same, or worse?

see for yourself, alot of ppl complaining about it. One thing to improve is to reset everything (the color settings) to default. It helps the gradients but it still shows banding. I made a simple black/white gradient in photoshop and it looked very banded. I'll take a pic.

I've never seen the 2405 sorry.. but apparently the 05 versions are much better in quality than the 07 ones. Dell also has no plans on a Rev 03 according to the Dell moderators.

Are you absolutely certain you got an A02?

What video card (and settings) and do you have it hooked up to the monitor? DVI I assume? You are in desktop mode and not Game or Entertainment modes, right?

yes a02, says so at the back of the monitor.. first thing i checked, heh.

MSI 6600 GT. Tried DVI and now VGA. the banding is worse in DVI but still present in VGA. Desktop mode.

I'm getting a refund from Dell come monday. I don't think it can be fixed.

the real question is this worse than dell's ghosting problems back with the 2005FPW/2405FPW

btw your monitor is a 2407WFP not a 2407FPW they changed it

wide flat panel instead of flat panel wide

Hmm, odd that it's worse in DVI than VGA! 😕 Just for S&Gs, I'd be interested to know if the banding would be present (or as bad) with another video card. You don't have another video card or PC that you could test the 2407 on do you?

nah i don't, but it's a known issue, even in 02 revs. see the link above to the dell forums. it's quite frustrating. I want this to work because I don't wanna go back to my big CRT box.. but given the other competitors' prices (Apple/Samsung), I guess i'll have to.

I forgot to add that when i scroll a page up and down i see some things show some bright greenish glow around it while i scroll.. same with the mouse cursor.

anyone know if Dell will keep a "fee" for refunding me or is it a full refund?

I just tried turning it off and putting back DVI in. the banding is lessened somehow, but still apparent. The greenish glow thing only happens on bright coloured backgrounds. For example on this forum it's fine.

I am debating wether or not i should get a refund or try a replacement. Somehow I think it'd only be a frustrating experience..

definately not everyone with these issues. but after this I don' tknow if i want to try again. my 21" CRT displayed colors just fine and as a designer that's kinda important.

You know, it's funny that you mention this.

When I received my original 2007WFP I noticed immediately via my desktop background that there was banding present. However, when I received my A02, my desktop background looked perfect and I no longer thought anything of it. There was no longer any banding on the skies of WoW / Oblivion.. no banding from my light sources in FEAR. So I was content.

Just ran gradin-v0.2-fs.exe, and those gradients look fine.

Went into PS CS2 and created a gradient like yours, and you can see some banding as you go from the medium shades of gray to black. It's definately not terrible though (and I certainly didn't buy this LCD to do graphics work), so I've got no qualms.

I was just going to recommend you ask them for a replacement.

I forgot to add that when i scroll a page up and down i see some things show some bright greenish glow around it while i scroll.. same with the mouse cursor.

After reading that, I'd definately recommend asking for a replacement.

How is dell with replacements? do you send the one you bought first and then you wait for them to ship you one? or can you keep it while you wait for the new one?

I've read of people getting 2-3 replacements before getting a good one. 🙁

ok good. I'm probably gonna choose for a refund either way. If they charge me a "restocking fee" i'm going to give them hell.

Due to all of the problems they've had, I would give 3 of them a try and none of them are suitable ask for a refund. The most they might do is try to charge you the cost of shipping the last one back to them, and even then, I'd probably talk to the one moderator who seemed to be handling the issue and ask for a full refund since they know that some still have issues and that you gave them a couple of tries.

Just got off tech support.. after answering some stupid questions he said they'd ship me a replacement tomorrow. At the end he said "I understand that the monitor is bad" in the tone of "yea we know it sucks".

I'll try a replacement and if it still sucks, i'll get a refund and buy an Apple display or a Samsung 244t.

At least they're taking care of it. That's one thing going in Dell's favor, at least. I just purchased and deployed 100 new OptiPlex PCs at work--out of those I had 1 bad monitor, 1 bad motherboard, and a faulty stick of RAM. All 3 issues were promptly taken care of by polite and knowledgeable service reps at Dell, so I will remain a Dell customer until they start sucking. I know in the eyes of some, they already have though.

Well I'll give them that, they do replace items with no hassle. I just wish they would make a new revision of this monitor to fix these issues. Alot of people are having them.

That's really the bottom line. If you can get a well-built Dell monitor, they are EXCELLENT. My 2001FP continues to impress me and I've had it for over 2 years now. But it's a well-known fact that Dell has had some issues with certain models, and there's no excuse for this many of them to have been affected. I just don't understand Dell's "we'll send you as many monitors as it takes until you get a good one" philosophy. You'd think it would be cheaper for them to improve QC standards and have less returns. Maybe they recoup their money by using the returned monitors as refurbs or something...I dunno.

I think they make money by using cheaper panels and components than other brands do.. that's why Dells are 400 bucks less than Apple/Sony/Samsung's quality 24" LCDs...

In the 2007FPW they use a nice 8-bit display, in the 2407 they use a 6-bit one that uses dithering to make it seem like an 8-bit.. god knows why they chose that road.
