Nice monitor so far (just got it a few days ago). I see a fair amount of backlight in evidence in the four corners when the screen is black, but don't notice it otherwise. I've heard varied things as to whether or not that's intended or faulty.
Anyhow, my real questions right now are not about that. They're about the SVIDEO connection and more specifically the resulting picture.
I have a Playstation (1, the original) hooked into the SVIDEO connector right now, and I can't seem to find a mode where the picture looks... correct. I understand televisions are generally more forgiving for things like picture -quality- (jagged edges and such), but in this case, the aspect ratio just doesn't seem right, no matter which Scaling option I choose on the monitor.
If I choose Fill, the picture is edge to edge, but somewhat squashed vertically (though interestingly, not VERY much so).
If I choose Aspect, the picture is edge to edge horizontally, but horribly squashed vertically.
If I choose 1:1, the picture is pretty much a smaller version of Aspect, only in the center of the screen.
Am I misunderstand the aspect ratio the Playstation (and presumably other video game sources) put out? I assumed it would be 4:3, more or less, so would work just fine in Aspect (which I thought was supposed to fill -vertically-) and 1:1.
My experience with 4:3 (or perhaps a better term would be Non-Widescreen) games (via PC) on the monitor has basically been positive. I can stretch the image to fill (not preferred for me), or I can have a 'true resolution' image centered on the screen, or I can have an image that's filled vertically, but with black bars on the left & right. That works as expected and looks fine.
I presumed the SVIDEO input worked this way as well, but it seems it does not?
The only other thing I can add is that a PIP screen of the SVIDEO input looks much more natural in aspect than any of the full screen options, but obviously is limited to the size of the PIP window (even at its largest setting).
I'm a bit frustrated by this, unless I'm just not setting something correctly.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice (or flat-out knowledge/know-how) on this? Thanks a bunch.
EDIT - For the 1:1 example above, the actual physical image displayed on my screen is about 7 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall. That should give you a good idea of the strange aspect ratio at work here. The Aspect option yields a similar AR, only filling the screen left to right.
