Delivery is not a percentage. Table service, it isn't an exact science but generally the more you're paying the more service you require (whether per item or just ordering more in volume)

If I bought a steak ($40) instead of a chicken salad ($10), why should I tip 300% more? Same number of orders (1), same number of trips from the kitchen (1), could even be same amount of time to make.

Disclosure: I do pay based on percentage of overall bill because it is commonplace and courteous, however, that doesn't mean it's right.

I f'ing hate tipping and usually do carry out at restaurants to avoid having to tip and also save money on beverage.

Now I see some places asking for tips on carry out, to that I say F OFF.

When I do dine in, I usually tip 15%, if the service is really good I'll go 15% of the post-tax amt instead of pre-tax.

For pizza delivery usually 2 bucks

I would have tipped the guy around $40 - $50.

Assuming he drove to the destination the only thing that he did extra was make the trips from the car to the destination which would be around 8-10 trips to get all the Pizza in.

Usually these guys get $2-$5 for delivery and they only make 1 trip from the car to the destination. 2$ x 10 = $20 and $5 x 10 = $50 so that would be my range for the tip.

$10 is cheap for sure, even just based on lugging 85 pizzas around. However as said, tipping 15 or 20% of that number would be downright dumb.

If it were me, I'd probably tip like 40-50 bucks.

I wish the US would just get rid of tipping altogether and up everyone's wages/the price of the food. If i don't like the service, not only will i not go back again, but i'll complain on yelp.

This country is dumb.

Edit: that being said, in my system i'd just take on a small surcharge for enormous orders like this one.

I feel bad for the guys who deliver my furniture or the Fed Ex/UPS guys who deliver oversized items... They get $50 max if I actually see them. And I tip based on weight or bulk, which really screws up the idea of tipping at restaurants.

Wow a lot of people in this thread should ask for extra "weak sauce" on their next pizza...

In Europe you are not expected or supposed to tip. It's part of your bill. I tried doing that in Germany and they looked at me weird.

Because the server is now having to tip out based on that $40 instead of that $10 chicken salad. Everytime you sit down at a restaurant, the higher you bill is the more money it actually costs the waiter to server you.

If you sit down at a table and have a $200 meal, most places require the server to pay anywhere from $8-$10 just for the pleasure to serve you.

Jobs where you actually pay someone else to work for them are awesome arent they!!

time & effort judgment from me. If it took them 5-10 minutes to get all those pizzas in (and that includes loading them in the car), I would've given a $20. Any more and it's just ridiculous. It's a tip, for effort.

I used to run a Papa Johns when I was college age, and every week we'd deliver 300 pizzas to the local high school. I had to go in early, and my assistant manager and I would knock out all those pizzas, cut and box, and then deliver to the school for their lunch.

Total tips we got - $0. I didn't really expect a tip, and actually made more money, since the store eventually did twice the business it did before I took it over (big help that school order)... so I got some nice hefty raises to my salary.

Delivering to a resident is another matter though; as a driver/deliverer, you have to verify every single pizza is correct to the order before you leave the store, box all the pizzas in hot bags, transfer them to your car, drive them there, transfer them to the house, and then take care of the money... $10 is a huge insult.

I assume this was a Corporate order - we order 100 pizzas a month if not more for our monthly all-hands meeting.

I will also assume there was more than one person doing the delivery and there was a delivery fee.

I see no outrage.

If you were actually "running" a Papa Johns, then you werent in a tipped position and shouldnt expect one either. The drivers working wage are the tips. If people dont want to pay the driver, they can go to the store and pick it up themselves, but then that would require effort on their part.

People are just cheap , lazy, and trashy these days
