I wrote a hello world program in java

That's the extent of my programming ability.

I really do want to be a code monkey but I can't figure out how to teach myself how. I'm either a shitty teacher or a shitty student. Possibly both. Either way its not my fault.

Find a code example of something fun and very simple online (100 lines or less). Doesn't matter what language, as long as you understand some of the concepts. Run it, and see what it does.

Next, try modifying some lines to see what happens. Keep the original source code so that you can always go back if you have an "oh shit" moment. Use the Internet as your code book if you want to know how to do something differently.

IMO, that's the best way to start out.
