AndrewR,

This is one of those definitive differences between Canadian and Americans and even some Canadians (hope that makes sense). The Gay Pride parade in Toronto has gone mainstream. Our mayor (with an approval rating pushing 90%) has even started officially attending the event. I don't think any reasonable Torontonian here sees it as an opportunity for gays and lesbians to stick their business in our faces. I think everybody sees it for what it is: a chance for gays and lesbians to say they are proud of who they are and to celebrate the inroads they've made into society - because not too long ago they were forced to suck in their pride and not be who they were. Many people 0are still uncomfortable with it (I personally wouldn't attend it...just cuz it's so damn crazy and I'm not that crazy of a party animal). The media has been trying to stir up controversy here about gay marriages recently and oddly enough the only people that truly seem to care about it are the government since it'll cost them! The Religious Right won't recognize these marriages but then again, they don't recognize a lot of marriages that are deemed legal under the law (i.e. divorcees that get married and such).

"a chance for gays and lesbians to say they are proud of who they are"

what are they?
they are guys that like other guys' dicks up their butts
they should be proud of themselves for that?

"The Religious Right won't recognize these marriages"

do they recognize all the hanky panky that goes on in legitimate marriages?
would you have those folks conduct a parade to be recognized for that, too?

Heheh. If there's a parade for that, I'm there! ;) That would be amusing.

Personally, while I think the reasons for the existence of the parade nowadays are a bit suspect, it's still fun. It's now mainstream. Get over it.

they are human beings. I dont see why people like you are so bothered by gays. How are they hurting you? Let them "stick thier dicks up their butts" (since thats all their lifestyle is about, brilliant observation.). its not hurting you, who really cares?? Save it for the KKK rally, dude.

get over it because it's mainstream?
naaa
nor will I get over abortion because it's legal
that's not a good enough reason to simply accept something

but.....I'm not that hung up on their parades

it's a facade, though

Oh, I'm not all worked up into a froth over it. As I mentioned, I really don't care all that much. I was just, mildly, agreeing with SirFshAlot's questioning of motives and not solely confined to this one parade.

Why exactly do gays feel the need to march in EVERY parade to proclaim themselves (New York and Boston St. Patrick's Day parades, for instance)? Just strikes me as odd, that's all.

Unix,
you miss my point

what they do doesn't bother me

they don't need to proclaim it

they can stop demanding my approval anytime they want

it's their business what equipment they prefer, not mine or yours, unless you like the solicitation

being hetero, or being gay, is something that doesn't need to be advertised
unless, of course, you need acceptance and approval for something you aren't really convinced of

[edit]
and you can stick that BS "KKK rally" comment up your twat

my thoughts exactly.

If gays are supposedly equal, then why do they have to go advertise that, to put it bluntly, they like screwing people of the same sex? Do heterosexuals have pride parades? No...then why the hell should the gays get parades? Remember, gays are "equal"...and this does not look equal to me. not that i'd participate in any kind of heterosexual pride parade, hehe.

Be a queer if you want, but don't shove it in my face.

Look how worked up you get over this... Hilarious, you get all angry
over something that has nothing to with you. Yes, the parade is a bit much, but so is nailing someone to a fencepost. I guess you and all your hillbilly friends may think this is ok, but I dont. I guess it is too complicated for you to understand, being you are only able to repeat what others have taught you, based on some old-school discrimination theory. Little sheep. I bet you a racist, too. Wouldnt surprise me a bit. You are an idiot. You can stick that up your butt. Probably wouldnt be the first thing to go up there.

I think the gay and minority communities in this country are just doing these things to raise awareness and garner support for their cause. When these marches were started, people did this because they wanted to show their support for the cause.

Now that people are indeed more aware of these groups, others start to question the validity of these marches. However, who is to say there is something wrong with it?
Besides, which mayor/governor would want to rest getting all politically incorrect by stopping this thing?

Also, as for what people do, and what things they do, as long as it is not criminal and harmful to other people, why should we be bothered?

Instead of bothering so much as to why gays shd have parades and whether they shd have marriages, etc. i say we shd all try and be fair and equal.

Besides, if gays can't have their parades because its about a sex lifestyle, what's the difference with races, religions? It's just a skin color/genetic difference/choice of beliefs. The fact that they should even think about starting a parade of such scale shows u that there is something seriously wrong rooted in our society...

I think that all of you instead of talking about this, should really be talking about care for the animals of this world, the chopping of the rainforests, the depletion of resources. These are all things that dun have people to organise parades around. No one to stand up for them.

SirFshAlot,

People like you are the reason gays feel its necessary to have a whole damn parade just to say they're not ashamed of who they are...because, and I quote, people who share you belief think gays are nothing more than:

<< guys that like other guys' dicks up their butts >>

.
For someone that is trying to downplay the significance of sexuality in being a source of pride, you're sure emphasizing the significance of sexuality in being a reason not to accept someone...so what will it be, a significant aspect of a person or not?

Guys that say Ricky Martin is gay just because all the women drool over him make me laugh ... they are probably the same men that were saying heck no she isn't when they was a rumor about Cyndi Crawford batting for the other team. We see how true that one was (she is married to a very attractive man and has a little boy with him)... No matter who you are if you are famous and considerred a sex symbol ... someone is going to start saying trash about you. If you look at Ricky Martin's ex girlfriend (the one he admitted having gone to a jewelry store to by her an engagement store and being mob before he could get in the front door so he left) and you hear how she talks about him .... welll I think it pretty much clears up the whole question of gayness ....

Who cares if he's gay or not? All of this arguing and name-calling over a particular celebrity's sexual preference?

Geez... why do humans so love to make other peoples' business their own?

UnixFreak...You just complained about him being "angry" then you shove all of those insults in his face. Don't you think you're acting like a bit of a hypocrite? Your point would have gotten across a whole lot better if you said whatever you were trying to get across intelligently and without insult. And why do you feel the need to defend gay people so much? He wasn't attacking you..

I think you're right l2c. I'd hoped this thread would spur some quality talk about the entertainment industry marketing celebrities to the public as people whom they are not. But as usual, it degenerates into a pissing contest once people who fail to put logic before reflexive propaganda regurgitation, begin to post.

Gay pride parades are fine... But I can see why some people would have a problem with it. Just like they would have a problem with me have a bondage/domination parade. Since it is a sexual preference, there is a point where a parade is the wrong forum to display it.

Unix,

"I may be a hypocrite, but at least I am not a bigot"

that says it all
your lack of ability to discuss this rationally speaks volumes
your assumptions about my emotional state whilst typing these posts declares your true ignorance

but of course your ignorance comes nowhere close to bigotry, does it?
of course not

GL,

People like you are the reason gays feel its necessary to have a whole damn parade just to say they're not ashamed of who they are

who are they?
if they didn't have the parade crying out for attention as GAYS; then, to me, they would be who they represent in their daily lives, outside their sexual preferences.

since UNIX brought up the KKK quite brilliantly earlier, let's compare that

maybe we should all defend them for who they are outside their blatant advertising of their discriminative values
maybe behind their white hoods they are decent fathers, and coworkers
maybe
then again, if they go out having parades declaring to the world their perverse attitudes, then maybe they deserve the negative attention they get, and get labeled as to "who they are".

If people who liked sex with others of their own gender didnt make it public, then it wouldnt be such an issue. And "who they are" wouldn't be defined by what they so proudly declare in their rainbow parades.

Arg, I hate getting involved in these stupid arguments, but...

SirFshAlot:

How could you possibly try to compare the KKK to Gays and Lesbians? I mean, the two groups are like polar opposites, man! The KKK is an extremely small (but vocal) group of bigots who base their agenda on their hatred of other people.

Gays, OTOH are a comparatively large minority group and are seeking equal rights in society. They want the freedom to love (not HATE) who they want to love without discrimination. They want the same tax benefits you or I would receive if married. Above all though, I'm sure they would just like for people to realize that there are lots of gay people out there and it's about time for people to stop viewing them as freaks of nature just because that's the way they are programmed.

And before this turns into a "born that way" or "choice" argument, ask any gay person whether they chose their sexual orientation. You'll get a No every time. That's enough evidence for me. Science will confirm it eventually though.

So whether it's a genetic defect or or simply one of nature's diverse mutations, gay people are gay, and society should accept them for what they are and give them equal rights.

The parades, however insulting they are to you (how about just not watching them??), are an outlet for gay people to show the world that they aren't going away. That they don't think being gay is something to be ashamed of or something to hide.

And you seem to be under the misconception that gay = sex. I know a few gay people, and most of them are in committed relationships. It's not just about sex. I mean, think of the last girl you were in a relationship with--think of all the things you did together. It's the same thing. When a guy says that he's gay, it's not his fault that gay sex pops into your mind...

Learn a little tolerance. Gay people aren't hurting you or infringing on your rights. Sheesh...

what is he saying?

I can't think of a time or a place when it was ever appropriate or needed to declare my sexual preference publicly.

some of you folks jump to the wrong conclusion when you read these anti-parade posts
it's not that I'm against any rights, but it's that I'm against crying out to the world what your sexual preference is

The KKK is an extremely small (but vocal) group of bigots who base their agenda on their hatred of other people.
you're right about it being an unfair comparison, but then again, what IS the agenda of the people forming these parades? and what do they expect their image to become after anouncing their sexual attitudes?

when was the last time someone in your workplace announced that they were hetero and demanded recognition for that?

oh, btw, I don't watch the parades
I don't watch any parades for that matter, I think they are silly.

is that intolerant?:)

I'm going to add more to this, though
homosexuality has been around forever
why has it all of a sudden become so fruity?
I am sure that there are plenty of people that I love and respect that engage in homosexual behavior. So what? It's their business what gets them off.
If I saw them waving a banner, or wearing a rainbow sticker, though, I would give them some sh*t, like I do with any other of my friends when I feel they need it.
Likewise, if one of my friends started displaying swastikas, I wouldn't just be "tolerant".

He's saying that he dates men and not women. He didn't say "I like it up the rear". YOU inferred that.

Of course, because we don't need to. IT'S ASSUMED. When being straight stops being assumed, then maybe gay people won't feel the need to be so blatant about it.

Gay people don't announce that they're gay out of some sick desire to tell everyone their biz. They do it for the same reason black people hold rallies, and for the same reason women march to "take back the night". They do it because they feel that society wants them to be silent about the discrimination they face on a daily basis. They're vocal about it because that's the best way to raise awareness. Being secretive and silent only makes it easier for the rest of us to ignore them.

You seem to think that the only reason people announce they're gay is simply to be vain and "shove it in your face", but that's just not true. Society wants them to keep quiet about it so that it doesn't have to address the glaring double-standard. Obviously, gays won't tolerate that.

Oh and another reason gays are so vocal is to lend support to each other. I am sure that for every vocal gay person, there are probably two others who sit in silence feeling ashamed of who they are because society tells them that they are disgusting and wrong because of it.
