thanks for the explanation VI. I had originally posted "use a slug" but it seemed others were advocating shot.

And true about a clean shot drops 'em. Don't want 'em running around after the shot.
:)

I think you snuck in and edited while I was ranting :)

heh, 6th post down. No edit.

neener, neener, neener.

Maybe I'm clueless (only been hunting a few times) but how in the world could you kill a dear with a shotgun? Its just going to piss him off.

Look at my post a few replies up. I've got a link in that post of a shotgun slug. It's BIG FRIGGEN LUMP OF STEEL. Imagine a lump of metal about half the size of your thumb smacking into you at about 1200 feet per second. It'll rip right through you, and leave a pretty good sized hole while doing it.

As for shooting a deer in the head...well you don't aim for the head.

You aim right behind, and a smidge up from the front shoulder. If you place your shot well you'll tag a lung or two and maybe the heart making for an instant kill. A good shot will drop a deer in it's tracks.

You sure they're steel? All the ones I've used have been lead...

Steel shot is hard enough on your barrel, I don't even want to think about what a steel slug would do.

Oh, on the subject of Benelli Nova's - I have one (special purpose w/ghost ring sights) & love it. I put a recoil reducer in it, & I need to pick up a mag extension + night sights for it.

I grew up shooting deer with a borrowed 20 gauge single barrel.
I carried it from about age 8 to age 14 and I killed more deer with
it than I have with a rifle. One reason being that I don't hunt as much
and I'm a lousy rifle shot. :)

There are a number of questions about how far you can see and shoot safely where you hunt.

In real close brushy areas you can't beat a 12 gauge with 00 buckshot. If you have further viewing
areas then a rifled slug for your 1st shot is best followed up with buckshot after that.

I like the remington 870 pump myself. Less chance of problems like some of the autoloaders present
and you really aren't likely to pop off 5 rounds at a deer and be very effective. Usually 1 shot is all
you ever get at a whitetail deer in this area. After the 1st shot they are off to the races and you would
be very lucky or good to hit one on the run even with a shotgun from a distance.

I live in NY... Shotgun only here for deer.

Ideal starter setup: Remington 870 express. I'd go with a 12 gauge, but that's my preference. The kick shouldn't be of any concern. If it hurts, you're holding the gun wrong.

The price is good and it comes with 2 barrels. One for slugs (deer and bears) and the other for shot (just about anything else)

Pick up a 5 pack of 3 or 4 different brands of slugs... see which one shoots the most consistently (site on the same point, shoot 5 times - find which brand has the tightest group) Then adjust the sites so the group is at the center, and use that brand.

Do the small game thing before deer season... you'll grow more accustomed to the gun, plus it'll seem a lot easier and lighter to use once you switch to the deer barrel. (Something I recognize a lot now, since I switched to a 22 for small game - something I regretted last year when it became difficult to get the sites on the kill zone quickly) Scope is unneccesary, but some people I know like over-under scopes (or whatever they're called) so they can use either the open sites or the scope, depending on the situation. The scopes are pretty cheap for the power you'd need, and if the deer is standing still, a "perfect" shot at 50 yards may be more preferable than being 8 or 10 inches off. I don't use a scope but have been considering one for a few years now.

Wallyworld sells them for under $300. A majority of the hunters I know started with similar setups for equipment and after a couple of years have switched to $600 and up guns, with a minimal increase in affectiveness.

Then you have obviously never been hunting for Mule deer on prairie/breaks/buttes of Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/Colorado/etc.

STFU dumb @ss thread crapper!

If I am not mistaken, he's of different culture than us. He's not used to the idea of it, even though that's how this country is founded. To all of you who say hunting for the sport of it is wrong/lame/etc, GO JOIN FRIGGIN PETA!

thats right, think about it... if we didnt control the population due to hunting, there would be way to many getting sick/diseases and then possibly spreading it to humans.

hunting for meat is what i do, i year yound duck hunt/deer hunt/all of it but i hunt for meat, not sport. i would give my 2 coppers to the OP but i try to never get involved with threads in ATOT, to many flamers...

i will say my benelli has served me well in duck/close deer hunting...

I'm looking to get a new gun myself and I picked one of those babies up off the rack -- and I was really impressed by how light it is. I'm looking for a gun for phesant more than deer, plus I shoot alot of trap. What kinda deal did you get on it in your area? I believe it was in the mid 300's, but I can't recall the price range.

Killing game animals is highly regulated and done for game management, as well as food for the hunters.
It has nothing to do with retribution.
Unless you are a vegetarian and a COMPLETE one at that, one is speaking with a "forked tongue".
Last time I checked, that steak, pork chop or chicken wing all came from an animal which hasn't "done any harm" either. They don't just magically appear on the styrofoam tray, you know.

And illegal unless you have a special permit because of a handicap. At least in Illinois.
