Wow. Never knew that people hunted deer with shotguns, and I don't consider myself ignorant of hunting or weapons in general. Learn something new every day.

While don't you try saying that while you're chewing on a juicy quarter pounder that came from a guy stabbing a penned up cow with a stun gun?

Since most deer in my area are taken from short distances (30 - 50 yards), is it worth getting a rifled barrel?

My Dad and a good friend of mine also have muzzle loader permit. They both shoot .50 black caliber rifles during a special muzzle loader season. My dad has dropped deer up to 150 yards with his muzzle loader.

You really have to be sure of your shot with those :) Plus they beat the hell out of your shoulder.

REAL hunters dont use shotguns. if youre so bad of a shot that you need a large area cloud of flying pellets to hit something, you shouldnt be hunting. go practice until you can actually hit stuff with a real gun.

Wow. Did you even read any of the posts in this thread?

You don't hunt deer with a "buck"shot load. You use a solid metal slug in a regular casing. It packs one HELL of a punch, but has very limited range.

What defines a REAL gun?? What difference is there (besides range) in using a slug gun, a muzzleloader, or a rifle to hunt? Kinda like taking a 'cool' looking handgun out in the woods? I like to try and see if you could hit a phesant with a .44 mag.

You've probably never even held a shotgun before in your life.. **sigh**

The Remington 870 is a good entry level gun. You will need to make sure you've got a Rifled Slug barrel, lest the slug not get the proper spin for good trajectory. Also a deer slug barrel will have open sights allowing for better aim. Once you get one, get thee to a range and practice bring it up and getting a shot off. USUALLY you will only have time for one shot, unless you're hunting from a stand or a blind of some sort.
For you anti hunting zealots, do a little research on where hunting license fees go (game management) and what happens when hunting is banned. (overloading the natural feed supply leads to overpopulation and crop damage from herd that are too large for the area).
It does make for an emotional arguement though.
< Will kill Bambi's dad given half a chance.
I personally have hunted deer with the same gun I suggested and a .303 Enfield and now have a Savage 30-06. Shooting a 165 grain bullet.
Enjoy yourself and be safe.

New to me as well. I would think the shotgun pellets would kind of "ruin the mean" if you get the picture. I guess if you use slugs as others said, it would be "neater" and easier to remove, but I wouldn't be comfortable...

There is a difference between having to drag around a carcass with a bloody head and having to drag around a carcass with a massive hole in its head.....I wouldn't be able to stomach it:(

<---shotgun wimp;rifle master:( ....except I only shoot at paper targets.

A rifled barrel will make the bullet alot stabler on trajectory (a direction change of a long slug will make it deviate from the intended trajectory). However, 50 to 100 yards is small distance, I think it won't affect the precision very much.
At up to 100 yards, if you can't hit a deer with open sights, you need glasses or something. Good open sights should let you hit a deer at quite a bit more distance - as long as the ammo will support you. The shotgun is not renowned for its precision in firing at long distances. However, up to 100 yards should be just fine.
For scope (and longer distances), you need something with a higher speed bullet. Definitely not a shotgun.
Have fun! I would go deer hunting only armed with a photo camera and some magnifiers

Damn there are a lot of uneducated people in here!

Many localities don't allow deer hunting with a rifle, for various reasons - One being you're not going to kill someone two miles away with a "spent" shotgun slug. Most people have no clue how far a decent rifle round is lethal to, with a shotgun you don't need to worry as much.

No, you don't use shot.

Remington 870 pump, 3" magnum rifled slugs will do. If you're really serious, get a rifled bbl, and a scope. A beginner need not that much stuff to start out.

In IL it is illegal to hunt anything with a rifle. Shotguns only.

And it makes sense. This state is as flat as a pancake and mostly prairie land and farm land.

In PA, it is illegal to use "shot" to take big game (ie. deer). You have to use a slug if you are going to use a shotgun. Also, it can't be a semi, only manually operated actions or single shot.

If you shoot a deer with shot, even 2 shot or buck shot, chances are your not going to kill it unless you are at about 10 yds.

STFU dumb @ss thread crapper!

If I am not mistaken, he's of different culture than us. He's not used to the idea of it, even though that's how this country is founded. To all of you who say hunting for the sport of it is wrong/lame/etc, GO JOIN FRIGGIN PETA!

Look at my post a few replies up. I've got a link in that post of a shotgun slug. It's BIG FRIGGEN LUMP OF STEEL. Imagine a lump of metal about half the size of your thumb smacking into you at about 1200 feet per second. It'll rip right through you, and leave a pretty good sized hole while doing it.

As for shooting a deer in the head...well you don't aim for the head.

You aim right behind, and a smidge up from the front shoulder. If you place your shot well you'll tag a lung or two and maybe the heart making for an instant kill. A good shot will drop a deer in it's tracks.

thanks for the explanation VI. I had originally posted "use a slug" but it seemed others were advocating shot.

And true about a clean shot drops 'em. Don't want 'em running around after the shot.
