I just wish I had a dime every time someone on AT said something like this, because I'd never have to work a day in my life again.

Yes, except it's true. Well, I suppose I may actually be more advanced than Einstein.

Maybe you can join the military. I have heard that they may pay some or all of your student loans.

After some of the stuff you say here, especially in the garage, I'm positive that you're lying or delusional. I'm not sure which.

The trick is turn turn the student loan into something that IS dischargable. IE, convert it into a home loan.

Do your parents own a house? If yes, then you may be able to buy the house off of them, have them pay off the student loan on your mortgage and default on the house right away. The bank comes in, sells the house in auction, and you can have your friends pick it up for a fraction of the original price. Obviously, it won't be rid of the whole thing, but a sizable chunk can be taken off with that scheme.

A competent judge would reverse that transaction in a second.

I thought the ivys structure the acceptances so that the rich kids pay full price and the rest get manageable scholarships
no clue, I just remember looking at them when I was applying for colleges and being like lololno.

and thank god for that, for all I've actually used my degree for (majored in English Lit and have been working in IT since a few months after graduation. haha)

Harvard offers assistance for all who's families make below a certain amount (I believe $100K back in the days).

I love living in a country where the government provides interest free student loans, repaid at no more than 10% of the gross wage, and with 75% of school fees subsidised by the government.

I want a president to run on a platform of promising to ship illegal immigrants to New Zealand and Canada.

Unless the OP comes forth with more specific details this has to be shens. His deflections and vague answers just make it less likely that there is any truth in this story. But by all means carry on, I love a good fiction story.

I think the US should just start jailing people who default on their debts, like in the 19th century...

They can be released after they've made an equivalent amount of license plates to dollars owed.

Pay your debts. The US Taxpayer will not and should not, bail you out of a mess you got yourself into. Learn how to manage what meager salary that expensive education is going to get you.

Seems like it should be more. A co-worker's son is going to Vanderbilt and it's $58,000 per year (including room and board) per year.

Sounds outrageous to me.

<---- Goes to look up the rates for upper end private schools.

Edit: Vanderbilt is nearly $57,000 per their site...so wow!!!

Edit #2: Harvard seems to be about $60,000 per year including room/board.

My wife attended Vandy for her Masters in FNP from 2002 to 2004 and it was ONLY $35k each of those years. She got a full ride merit scholarship for year two, so we lucked out. Living expenses (not in a dorm) and books were close to $20k each year. Nashville wasn't crazy expensive but books sure as hell were.

Two years of Vandy at $35k, or three years of SFSU at $25k means Vandy won.

That, plus her undergrad, plus my AAS, means we'll be paying for a while...

I have a shit-ton of student loans, nearly 200K worth, and will be absolutely slaughtered by debt for the next 15 years+ f I pay them off at the bare minimum, which would actually take more than 60% of my gross pay per month. It seems to me that the smart thing to do is declare bankruptcy. My question is this: If someone were to do this, will they take things like my car (it's like 8 years old)?

(1) Student Loans are rarely dischargable
(2) if it's not a private loan, look into IBR payment plan. I have nearly 130k in loans, and my payment is less than $500/mo.

I don't mind telling you up that your situation makes me feel better about my 55k in student loans.

Edit: Which correlates to roughly $400/mo for me @ 20 yrs (I have no intention of letting it go that long). So, you would have to be at roughly $1600/mo :ninja:
