Decisions: G-Nexus (Unlocked) vs. GSII (Subsidized) vs. Nokia Lumia 800 (Subsidized)

I think it will come down to these three.

On DEC 14, TMO US and Nokia have some sort of big announcement.

Question is whether I go for the Galaxy Nexus ($750, no contract renewal) or pay significantly less for a GSII or possibly Lumia 800 with renewal.

Any thoughts on the Lumia 800 with Mango?
 
I like WP7 and I love Nokias, so my vote should be obvious.
You shouldnt ask between Android and Windows. You need to decide which OS you wish to use and then pick the best device. If you wanna go with iOS then the choice is easy. If you want WP7 I recommend Nokia.
If you prefer Android the decision will require more work.
 
It's still not guaranteed that the Lumia 800 will go to T-Mobile. So far only the Lumia 710 has gone through the FCC with T-Mobile bands. I definitely wouldn't sign a 2 year contract for a mid-range phone like the 710.

The advantages of the Galaxy Nexus over the GSII are:
- way higher screen resolution (1280x720 vs 800x480)
- Android 4.0
- it's a Nexus device, so you will be first to get new Android releases
- NFC, which will hopefully be put to good use at some point

It's up to you to decide whether those are worth the extra cost. Also keep in mind you can save some money on your monthly plan by bringing your own device with T-Mobile.
 
I'm sorry, but you're crazy for including the Nokia in this discussion. It's a low-end device. Focus S or Titan, maybe.

Small pentile display, no FFC (seriously? is this 2010?), worse camera than the Titan or (esp.) Focus S.

And it ain't HD unless it's an actual HD resolution.

Besides, the phone that's arriving is the 710... which IMO is worse than the Radar.

And why the hell do you need one? The whole point of a smart phone is you dont have to talk with people in real time. You can IM, TM, Email, whatever. The only way you can video call is if the other person also has a front camera (which many people dont) and you both have the bandwidth (one or both of you might be on 2g, plus I've seen 3g video calls and they arent great, and not many people have 4g and this phone doesnt anyway) not to mention they have to be willing to video chat which not everyone likes.

A lot of people need/want them for business. I know we have been having a lot more meetings that use Skype or Adobe Connect and a FFC gives people the option to participate in those from their phone. Likewise Skype is a fairly popular way for people to communicate with distant relatives and friends who they can't normally see face to face.

Also the Adreno 205 is fairly limited when it comes to media playback, it's nowhere near as capable as the original Galaxy S and the Galaxy S2 is obviously on another level.

live chat. Question is - in this day and age - why NOT have one? Nobody is forcing you to use it but it's there if you want. You're just rationalizing.

Err...? 😛

I agree with Puddle Jumper. Front facing cameras are an expected feature for a new smartphone today. Especially when you consider most people expect to buy and use that phone for the duration of their contract. A year or two from now you can expect everyone to have a front facing camera.
 
I highly doubt the Windows phone coming to T-Mobile on the 14th is the Lumia 800. I am sort of in the same boat as you though.
 
I just checked Tmobiles site. They have NO nokias for sale, not even refurbished.
And they were the only ones to even bother with Nokia. 🙁
 
Will you go with an unsubsidized plan if you purchase an unsubsidized phone?

Because if you pick up the SGII subsidized, maybe use it for a few months, see something else you like better, you can sell it and help pay for the new phone.

Or get the SGII now, subsidized, sell it, new and use the proceeds to pay for a GN...

Either way, pass on the idea of any Nokia for right now, I still can't see them making any progress in the US... Android is the elephant in the living rom.
 
Who offers unsubsidized plan discounts besides T-Mobile? I went with a (subsidized) SGS2 because T-Mobile only offers EDGE here in my area. I'd bring my own phone if I could get HSPA+ but AT&T offers no such discount, to my knowledge. Even their prepaid plans aren't any better than postpaid with my corporate discount.
