Who offers unsubsidized plan discounts besides T-Mobile? I went with a (subsidized) SGS2 because T-Mobile only offers EDGE here in my area. I'd bring my own phone if I could get HSPA+ but AT&T offers no such discount, to my knowledge. Even their prepaid plans aren't any better than postpaid with my corporate discount.

I was assuming he was referring to TMobile service since he mentioned the Nokia/TMobile announcement.

I have to admit, I'm not really paying attention to who's carrying the SGII or GN :( Am stuck on Verizon for a while longer... And not likely to go with a GSM carier because of the poor penetration of the signal. All of my friends noticed an immediate difference for the better when I switched to CDMA. (Sprint and Verizon)

That has to do with your local GSM coverage. 850mhz GSM can penetrate pretty darn well. You might be in an area of AT&T 1900 or something. AWS 1700 might not be much better.

I work in lead lined rooms, management's official phones are VZN, so we have a CDMA booster in our building, currently they only boost voice bands :( although they finally beefed up the guest Wifi network...

We have several sweet spots in the building where GSM signals make it through, but not many... TMobile is completely useless unless you're in an outside room with a window, AT&T has the sweet spot penetration.

Maybe pick up a cheap / used Mango handset and play with it for a while? See if you like it before you decide.

galaxy nexus for sure. its arguably the best android phone on the market, and will be for some time. also it has both at&t and tmobile 3G bands so you wont be stuck on edge wherever you go, plus you'll be free of a contract. it ends up being slightly cheaper over the course of two years. since its a nexus device, it'll get updates first as well, and it'll have pretty decent resale value (i still see nexus ones going for $200).

im sure the galaxy s 3 will be announced within a few months, so the gs2 will be superseded by then, and tmobile is only getting the lumia 710 instead of the 800 (why the hell are they doing that anyway?).

Had the same dilemma:

gnex for 750 or gs2 for 50 subsidized.

I was going to try to sell the gs2 and make a ~400 dollar profit, but i just couldnt justify spending another ~400 dollars an a only slightly better device, as bad as i want it.

Ive had my gs2 for a few weeks now and i love it. Runs CM7 super smooth, and I dont plan on waiting too long for ICS/CM9 to be out for it.

GS2:
+$400 less (for me)
+fastest cpu
+best GPU
+lower res - compatibility, and will help device last longer when cpu has aged - not everyone is ready for 720p yet
+non-pentile - looks better than most 800x480 phones, not as good as nexus screen
+feels better in the hand
+battery life? (4.3<4.65 for battery life)
+much better camera
+expandable storage

0 - i think it may be NFC capable
0 - physical buttons (i still like mine)

-lower res - 720p is sweet
-not a google device (but backed by many developers)
-cant bring to t-mobile and att
-doesnt currently have ICS
-shutter lag (but better camera)

did i miss anything?

Is this different from the "international" version? I want the one that will work with T Mobile's 4G (albeit at 21Mbps). Is this it?

It's the GSM pentaband version. Contact them over twitter if you have any questions, they seem responsive.

"if you use the discount code "VZSucks", you can knock another $45 off that, bringing the new total to $685.50. Not a bad deal for an unlocked high-end smartphone that's not available subsidized yet."

haha but seriously, has anyone used negri electronics? If im importing, I want someone who is super reliable, and will also deal with samsung if i need any sort of service.

If i was able to sell my GS2 for 450, id still have to pay 300+ to get a nexus :\

Several mobile reviewers (Engadget, GigaOm, ZDnet) mentioned they had bought their personal Nexus' from Negri and that the experience was of A+++, would buy again variety. Hit them up on Twitter, they seem active. https://twitter.com/#!/negrielectronic
