I am planning on picking up a JL W3 12" Prowedge sealed enclosure. According to the specs on the W3, it is designed for 300 watt continuous at 4ohms. Which would work best for me?

Here is the wattage chart from JL on the W3: JL Wattage Chart

Comparison; (Crutchfield Side By Side Comparison - Link

MRD-M605 - $325 + tax (7%)
? 600W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@14.4V 1% THD+N)
? 400W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)
? 250W x 1 RMS (4ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)

MRD-M501 - $299 + shipping ($11)
? 550W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@14.4V 1% THD+N)
? 425W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)
? 225W x 1 RMS (4ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)

MRD-M301 - $199 + tax (7%)
? 350W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@14.4V 1% THD+N)
? 250W x 1 RMS (2ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)
? 150W x 1 RMS (4ohm;@12V 1% THD+N)

i'm pretty confident this amp will push it pretty hard.

it required 1 ga. wiring as it cranks up a lot of juice. i went to competition with this and a L7 12" solo baric and took 2nd with 140 db's.

be careful that you get a capacitor to it has juice when it pumps out lots o' bass.

good luck.

Everything except country...

Mainly though, Classical, Jass, Rock, Techno, Pop

However, i wouldnt mind playing a bass track once a week or something...

BTW, just called Sound Advice, they can do $325 + tax on the M605

Before I even click the link, once you said competition and also mentioned capacitor, I knew something was up.
I don't think any audio expert would recommend a capacitor....its a waste of money.

First I wouldn't buy an Alpine amp and second, I wouldn't buy from Crutchfield. (great customer support but way overpriced).

BTW, is the sub, DVC or single 4 ohms ??

Ive heard nothing but good things about Alpine amps, and Crutchfield is only in contention for the 501 amp as its not sold locally anymore and its an authorized dealer...

The Sub is a dual voice coil...

Since the sub is a 4ohm sub, the difference between the M501 (225w) and the M605 (250w) would be negligable. I would definetely get the M501.

Price difference is $348-$310=$38... for 25 watts.

Well i guess thats good since i like the look of the 501 better. Although its a little larger, i much prefer the VFD on the 501 as opposed to the LCD on the 605.

Its a DVC so he can run it at 2 ohms but the wattage difference at 2 ohms is still minimal.

Alpine is not a bad amp but for the money, you can definately get better.

For example, I bought a used JBL BP600.1 for $100 shipped.
While you probably won't find it that cheap, Ebay still has it for less than $150...still better than spending over $300 for an AMP.

JBL BP600.1
300w x 1 at 4 ohms
600w x 1 at 2 ohms

Not a big fan of JBL though, my friends JBL amp crapped out on him after 2 months.

Is it dual 2, dual 4, or dual 6? Alpine amps are fine, but I wouldn't buy one new, especially at MSRP. You could easily find a much better deal on something used. Hell, you could get a RF 250a2 for around 50 bucks.

JBL makes good amps. There's a world of user error that can lead to an amp's demise.
