I'll start by saying I know I should just pony up more money and get a concept2 - at least that's what everyone seems to say on any site I google. But I can't afford that and living out in the boonies means I can't find one used on craigslist either.

So, for under 500, what can I get that isn't horrible? Any ideas?

You should be asking on a crossfit forum.
Concept2 would have great resale since everyone and their brother are looking for them used.

I'd suggest checking your local craigslist for a used Concept2 machine. You can get older models for a bunch cheaper. Any decently maintained Model C and newer should be good. Even a model B might be fine for light use.

Another vote for the Concept 2. I rowed on them back in college. They are by far the most reliable. Parts can be found and they have a resale value. I want to say I've seen them for around $800 if you look....or maybe $500 used. I would spend the extra money if you really plan on using it.
