I'm not reading this whole thread, so some of what I say may have already been said. If I sound unhappy, it's because I am.

ATOT has a lot of potential. Lots of very smart, very talented people in here, and some are really friendly and helpful too. I've learned a lot here, and I've helped some people too. Sometimes you can find something really cool here, and I thank you all for the good experiences I've had here.

But there are WAY too many threadcrapping troll bullies, and the mods don't seem to do much about them. Time after time after time I've wondered why nobody said or did anything when someone said something really nasty or derailed a thread or picked a fight or told someone they should go die. I haven't read the list of rules the mods agree to, so I don't know if it's them or Anand or what, but why is that kind of behavior tolerated so much? For instance, I am a Christian, but if I talk honestly about my beliefs, I often get viciously attacked and the mods do nothing. This is supposed to be a place for everyone, isn't it? I didn't notice a "You must be at least this agnostic to ride" sign. Sometimes I've even been personally attacked by a mod, which is a real jaw-dropper for me.

And all the sex "jokes"...seriously, not funny. People can't even make up NEW disgusting and immature stuff to say. The same old things over and over. Your mom. Show us naked pics. Hey, I saw something vaguely phallic in that innocent picture. That stuff was barely funny when we were kids, and I personally think it's destructive to real communication and personal connections. I should be able to post a picture of my grandma and some puppies without someone saying something like "oh hai gmilf and all her bitches".

The awesomeness of ATOT actually highlights the unawesome parts. The fact that other sites are worse is no excuse. I expect more out of ATOTers because they are not the average internet users. It's not like most of you are too dumb to understand basic interpersonal dynamics, as could be said about many other sites. It's not like you haven't seen flame threads and realized how they start and why they're not cool. It's not like you don't know how hate rots the soul and destroys relationships. So why do so many of you keep doing the same things? And why do most of the rest of you just let it go, or worse, respond to trolls in their own language? You know better than that.

In summary: the good stuff gets stomped on and the bad stuff doesn't get stomped on, and people just sit back and let it happen. Not that I'm totally innocent...I've said some dumb things myself. I'm not better than anyone else. But I've learned and changed, and I wish more others would too. It hurts me to see such a cool site with so many cool people degrade like this.

Social forums this happens. Tech forums, no.
The social forums are for blowing off steam/neffing/etc so it doesn't happen in the tech forums.

The tech side of the forums I really enjoy and don't really have much to complaign about, other than maybe a bit more activity in some of the forums would be nice.

I dont really mind a lot of the thread crapping and flaming. it's part of internet culture and the witty ones make it interesting. This isnt Barney fan forum.

Is this forum dying? It seems slow(er) and boring as of late. I think the promise of a move to better forum software and then it just not happening is part of the reason.

What can we do to increase activity here?

48 thousand posts will do that to ya ;)

I think part of it is the software having issues...and a big part is breaking up offtopic into too many forums...it was better when it was one big mess....threads were more exciting.

You do have access to stats...

Google Trends for forums.anandtech.com

So the whole of anandtech (all subforums) has gone from 60k in July 2007 to under 30k at present :(

that maybe, but there is quality. QUALITY I tell you. ;)

THIS is a real problem here... less traffic to the main site means less new members to the forums. As members here "grow up", (AKA get married, get 9-5 jobs, have kids, etc) older members (who aren't addicted!) aren't going have time to post as much as they used to, either.

Personally, I blame the lack of PC exclusive gaming titles that really kick ass and make me want to go out and buy them. The era of building an extreme gaming PC to play the latest version of Quake or Unreal clone at maximum settings seems to be gone... most people just play it on their XBox 360 or PS3 now.

Actually, this is most likely the cause. PC gaming is dead.

i agree with that on the pc market anyway. It used to be i could build a top notch gameing computer for far less then anyone was selling a shitty basic computer. So everyone and there brother was building computers. Now you can buy a cheap computer thats actually a good computer. so why bother?

I think smaller forums are not necessarily bad. Times have changed, people grew older and got other hobbies & passions. I myself can't remember when was the last time I went to anandtech.com (not the forums); my Pentium 4 is still here, working perfectly. Most people still lurke, but after hundreds of witless posts and replies, why bother? It just got too dumb.

The offtopic was just great, huge variety of topics, hot deals and latest news, all in one.

FWIW I posted a random story from work, and there's more (genuinely funny) stories too, as well as some stuff I think about. More users just posting would help traffic, when I got here I was nervous to post because I felt like I would get trampled on for being under some level of posting. Now I just check that my posts mostly contain something which can be talked about.

.
So all the ignorant idiots could put in their 2 cents when somebody asks a serious question? In H&F there is hardly any flaming trolling which leads to a lot of informative helpful discussions.

I believe the reason OT is getting less hits is because those who actively participate here are boring, whiny and silly. Now those whom I speak of will disagree and that's why they continue to actively participate here but if you guys were actually interesting don't you think it would draw more people to this place? You need to stop blaming others and start looking at yourselves.

If everyone stops and thinks about what brought them here in the first place then that might help them see the possible reason why there has been such a decline in activity in this site/forums.

I came here back in '03 to looking for some info on a custom build I was doing then and stayed for OT and Hot Deals.

Since then consoles like the xbox 360 and ps3 have come out that can do PC quality games for a fraction of the cost of a gaming PC.

Since then manufactured computers have dropped dramatically in cost, which reduces the desire to do a custom build.

Since then all the sub forums were created.

Since then there has been a large increase in other sources for finding answers to custom build questions.

Etc, etc, etc...

It's the results of many things IMO, not just one (IE: sub forums) they all have played their part in making this site a former shell of itself.
