Willy Wonka was a good man. As MartyMcFly and n0cmonkey stated he rescued and in turn they worked for him. Just like Morgan Freeman and Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. Costner saved Freeman's life and while Costner didn't make Freeman stick around to "pay back the debt", Freeman did it of his own free will and they were more like friends even though Freeman was "indebted" to Costner. So I think the Oompa Loompas worked for Wonka out of their own free will to "pay" him back for rescueing them.

I also believed the Oompa Loompas realized the impact they made on the world by working for Wonka. Obviously the world loved Wonka chocolate and the Oompas wanted to be part of that. So I think if even he hadn't saved them from their deaths, they would work for him given the opportunity.

They would leave, but they value life more. Why didn't all the slaves just revolt or run at the same time? Probably because they feared for their lives, and it was difficult for them to organize given their situation. The same could be said for oompa loompas.

Think about your argument. With slaves it was usually 1 or 2 slaves per owner. There was an entire army of Oompa Loompas. AND, the Wonka Company was large enough for any number of them to "escape" if they were held as slaves. They WANTED to be there. They loved their jobs.

There are the dreamers, and there are the workers. The workers are next to useless without the dreamers.

Some slaves still escaped, as I am sure some oompa loompas did. Large plantations sometimes had upwards of 40 to 50 slaves. 40 or 50 slaves could easily take down the family of whites that owned them. However they didn't, because they were never sure who would survive.

So he calls them worthless! You simply prove my point...they were nothing but property to this man. Workers can be dreamers too, but he probably never realized that because he was too busy beating them into submission.

They agreed with Wonka's viewpoints though. Everytime something happened to one of the bad children Wonka would bad mouth them and then the Oompas would come out and sing a song about it. They don't sing while they work, many were working without singing. They were singing to get a message across to the others, they were reinforcing what Wonka already stated. Slaves worked for their masters, but I highly doubt they ran around and said how much they loved it and agreed with everything their masters said in song.

Listen to yourself. Think about the end of the movie where Wonka takes Charlie and Grandpa Joe in the Wonkavator. He left the grounds. There was no one there to monitor them. Maybe Arthur Slugworth but he cant take care of all of them. Im sure that at their place of employment there were certain routines, so the Oompa Loompas HAD to have known where Slugworth was.

Beating them into submission? Did you see any signs of abuse with the Oompas? No! They appear peppy at work and more importantly healthy, and some of them even plump. Yes, slave owners took care of their slaves and fed them(most of them anyways), but I highly doubt slave owners would feed their slaves to point where they would gain weight. Generally speaking being overweight is a sign of someone eating more than needed and not working enough to burn it off.

Or he simply gave them more peanuts to eat for agreeing with him in front of guests. I could always agree with the president when I am in front of him, that doesn't always mean I feel that way. oompa loompas aren't morally perfect, they wouldn't be above it.

In the book, Oompa Loompas are miserable tree dwellers of South Africa (I believe), who have to eat bitter bugs because it's readily available. Willy Wonka had shut down his factory because trade secrets were being leaked by his employees to high-paying competitors. When touring the continent, he met with these people, whose favorite food was the cacao bean. Promising them shelter for predaotrs, elements, and all the cacao they could eat (in chocolate form no less), the leader of the tribe gladly accepts. No workers go in or out of Wonka's factory now, and huge sections of the underground portion of Wonka's factory makes up their city. They're not the property of Wonka, they agree to live as his tenants, therefore, they are not slaves.

Bingo! We have a winnar!

I am appalled you uphold Lincoln with such high standards. I am sure there are many people from Canada or the UK here that might be able to get their hands on a world history book. Better if you can find one pertaining mostly to the history if the US (absolutely not what we read in school though, being it's our history.... we had a very strange thing of washing away our bad sore spots with famous presidents berofre and while in power). Washington for that matter to. It is absolutely disgusting we put them on our currency.

Other than that, I agree with your arguement short of comaring him to that murdering swine Lincoln.

You know, not eating enough can make one bloat up because of the fluids and gases in the body as well. Furthermore, it would benifit Willie to make his workers keep healthy so they would work harder.

As far as the beatings go, in a public setting, when one wants to put on a farce of "friendship" with the oompa loompas, one would NEVER beat about the face. The stomach is the main thing to hit. Anything that can be covered up...why do you think they wore full body suits? To cover up the beatings.

I just compared him to Lincoln due to the hat. 🙂

willie had a part in telling that story, of course it's going to be slanted in his favor. History is written by the victor.

You've just contradicted yourself. If you are starved to point of bloating, you are in no condition to work, yet you say he would want to keep them healthy enough to work. Which one is it? Are they starved or overfed? And if I were a slave owner I would feed my slaves just enough to keep them on weight based on their workload, maximum efficiency and ROI; not so much food that they would gain above average levels of body fat.

"Some of the workers wanted to leave later, and asked Willie if they could do so. Not willing to give up free, tax free labor, he told them no. They began to walk out and were stopped by Wonka Factory security.

Sent back to their homes, they planned a revolt so they could stop the madness. Willie anticipated such a move and was ready for them the next morning. He shot the leaders, and told them if anyone else tried to leave, they would be shot. Anyone wanting to argue would recieve pain until they decided to stop. Hence the slave era of the oompa loompa's began."

-The confessions of a dying man, by Willie Wonka.
