People who can't tell the difference between a 2002 325 and a 2002 330 based on the color of the trim around the license plate and windows are idiots?

They could just be people that don't bother to waste time memorizing the entire BMW product line and could really give a good flying fsck what kind of car anyone is driving.

Ext: a parking lot in suburban america

::A debadged car with mirrored tinted windows pulls up, blasting Mike Jones' "Back Then", driver gets out, wearing dark shades, his demeanor would have you think that he is trying to look like the toughest guy in the world::

Bystander#1: Hey what kinda car is that?

Driver: Shhhh. It's a secret. I can't tell.

Bystander #2: Um... that's a Kia.

Debadging euro cars "always looks sleek"? LOL

I'm quite certain that most of the people in this thread have seen a debadged car before. ;)

Man, the guy asked for opinions and everyone gets their panties in a bunch because people have different opinions.

on a low 325 debadging 99.99% means you are trying to hide that you are driving a cheapo base car ...

this from someone who drives a z3 2.3 and an X5 (so i have an entry and medium level) .. and this is how our local bmwcca feels too ...

and none of mine are debadged or with silver grills or 2-dual exhaust tips or shark grills to make it look like 4.8is ... ebay is full of such items for dweebs ...

I've always thought how good of a laugh I could get from this scenario:

1) Buy a GT-R R32.
2) Remove the emblems.
3) Replace emblems with Oldsmobile emblems.
4) Remove spoiler.
5) Wait for ricer to think he can beat your "Oldsmobile"

You can see many honda kiddies spending late nights trying to figure out what Oldsmobile just beat them ;).

Seriously? Why illegal? Cops need to be able to identify the make and model of the car?

That's what I'd assume. One time when I got pulled over, the cop knew most things about my car without even looking. Without badges, they wouldn't be able to tell via their tools, I guess.

That's what I was thinking. People around here usually don't debadge their low end cars...it's usually someone with a car like an STi that either a) is tired of people always trying to get them to race or b) wants to make SRT-4 owners who don't know much about cars think they have a regular Impreza/WRX so that when the poor sap attempts to show off they can smoke them.

I've been seriously thinking about debadging the GTO. Not many people know what it is until they see the bumper and emblems. After I'm done with performance mods I'm getting an 04 hood, Monaro rear bumper insert, badgeless reproduction SAP grills and removing all all badges except the arrowheads. It would be fun pulling up to an unsuspecting victim at a stoplight and opening the cutouts.

You paid for the car, why do you need to advertise for them on top of it. Debadge it i say.

I debadge my vehicles and prefer the clean look myself.

I'd like to see a link to NJ law (or any other State) that forbids debadging, sounds like BS to me. Car emblems are purely cosmetic and can be removed or even added to any car.

Yeah I understand that... what I meant by my last question was "Is it because cops need to be able to..." not "Why would cops need to be able to..."

I was unclear.

It can look alright but generally I don't like it too much on BMW's or Audi's.

I took the 'toyota' part off of my car but left the matrix and xrs parts because of the symmetry.. i just didnt' like the toyota word off to the side for no reason.. looks much better now =D I see other matrix (matrixes? matrices?) that are totally debadged and don't like the look

i'm also in nj and am curious about that law... i've never heard it before and my entire family has been involved in some type of police work

yup definitely phony because on many cars like porsche and such there is an option for "model badge delete" .. our boxster came deleted from the factory ...

Just about everyone assume a debadged BMW is either a 325 or a 323ci and the debadged Audis are A4s. It's common knowledge.

Just because you can get it from the factory like that, that doesn't make it legal. Most cars, including those sold in NJ, have a 4" strip of tint across the top of the windshield. That's illegal in NJ.

Of course, just because it's illegal, that doesn't mean it's enforced. It could very well be the case that NJ requires the make and model of the car to be displayed somewhere, but cops don't enforce it.

Just because someone claims its illegal in NJ doesn't "mean" its illegal either. I saw nothing searching google, unless someone provides a link to said law....shens.

Actually yes it is illegal to debadge in NJ, I remember someone over on the Acura forums debadged and replaced it with Honda Accord markings (the american TSX is the Euro Honda) and he got pulled over and the car impounded. He got in trouble because of rebadging, but also debadging in the first place.
