Death Penalty Poll (Old Poll Deleted, due to error)

Not only do I favor it I also feel more strict punishment needs to be implemented. People are less likely to do something wrong knowing what it will cost them, other places do this and have much lower crime rates where they do extreme forms of punishment. We dont need to go as far as cutting off hands for stealing, but you get the idea.

I refuse to answer in the poll because you seem to think liberal v conservative is an actual measure of anything. It's not. At all.

Put in an option for independent.

I am what I am (politically), and I support criminals being killed for serious crimes (murder, actual rape, any 3 violent convictions, any 3 convictions for crimes which COULD have led to injury or death of an innocent, etc). After much thought (stemming from discussions here on AT actually) I have come to believe that the state shouldn't be the ones throwing the switch however. I would like a system whereby qualifying criminals were allowed to be killed by the estate of the victims with no reprisals. Should the estate not administer the death, the sentence would immediately commute to life without the possibility of parole, and be administered by the state/fed.

With regard to social issues, I tend to be somewhat liberal. However, I do strongly favor the death penalty in that I believe that sometimes society needs to take a moral stand to say that some crimes are so repugnant that they deserve the ultimate punishment.

I agree the poll could be better, I dont know what to consider myself in the way of liberal etc. I didnt vote also cause of that reason.

Not near enough middle ground in that poll. I'm a political fence-sitter although I've leaned more to the left as of late (a relatively new turn of events for me). As far as the death penalty is concerned, I am mostly opposed as it is often applied unfairly or inconsistently. I prefer to take the old Natural Law/Gangreous Limb argument taken by Thomas Aquinas: Incarceration for most, but death only for those whose continued existence (even under incarceration) poses a threat to the rest of society, either by example or otherwise. It probably isn't the best reading of his argument by far, but it does convey how I feel. CP should be rare and only applied for the most heinous of crimes...generally the kind where "tragedy" morphs into "large-scale statistics".

I am an independent that holds views typically associated with extremes from both ends or neither party at all. I typically vote Democrat, at least Presidential elections. I favor the death penalty.

Well, just as in an election choose one side you agree more with.

I agree with the death penalty in theory, but I don't think that the reality of our justice system is fair enough to implement it. Too much doubt and uncertainty, too many cases overturned years later on DNA Evidence. If we had a perfect legal system that was never wrong, I'd agree but it's better to let a thousand guilty people go free than to wrongly execute a single innocent person.

I'm a registered Independent.

edit: Wow, the poll actually got WORSE.

Social: Center-Right
Personally against the death penalty, but individual states should decide if it is an option within its borders.

Bullshit...anyone who does that regularly is an ignorant, worthless tool. It doesn't matter if you win, it matters that you do what is right, and what you agree with. If that means voting for someone that gets 9 total votes, that's just the way it is.

I make exceptions ONLY when not doing so could be the most dangerous act of a lifetime - for instance in any election against Bush it was acceptable to vote Democrat JUST to try and keep him the hell away from power.

Sorry for the rant/tangent...just a personal peeve of mine.

A) I'm not a liberal, in the past 3 presidential elections I preferred the liberal candidate over the neo-conservative candidate, but I am not a liberal
B) Even were I to align myself as liberal, in your poll, I have the option to oppose the death penalty, or to oppose the death pealty...but no option to favor the death penalty

No matter how you look at it, I can't vote in your poll.

Then choose the last option.

I find the last option somewhat insulting.

Just because I don't fit into one of your little boxes, my POV doesn't matter? Oh yea, well your poll doesn't matter :|
