I don't partition. No reason to. However, I do have multiple hard drives. I have 2 RAID 0 sets, one backup drive and two external backup/storage drives. For my absolute critical stuff I have it on my C: RAID for fast access, my internal backup drive and my external backup drive.
There is a reason to partition. MY windows partition is fine to lose. I can reinstlal a billion times because all I lose is critical apps. All my outlook mail, documents are on a second partition. My entire laptop occupies a partition on my second drive's last partition.
Seagate 7200.8
16gb = Windows 32-bit
16gb = XP 64-bit
100gb = Junk/games/apps
100gb = Media/more junk/legacy
Hitachi 7K250
16gb = Windows backup
69gb = download directory, raw unprocessed files, some backup of mission critical data, continuation of media
69gb = copy of laptop, backup of legacy stuff
I have 2 copies of my MP3s and two copies of my photos on 2 separate machines and 2 copies of my webpages and documents. Mirrored on laptop and desktop so I can go wherever I want and be up to date.
Windows crashed on me last week. I booted into D: (XP 64-bit) backed up the few AIM logs I had and a few documents that I was done with but nevertheless I wanted to save them. Reformatted C: and reinstalled XP 32-bit. I was up and running again in 2 hrs.
2 years ago my DeathStar crashed and a partition disappeared. I booted from my secondary drive which also has Windows and I was backing up and recovering all I could soon enough.
Always a good idea to have a second instlalation of windows, especially on a secondary drive.
