<< At these kinds of places, it should be cash ONLY. Even a dork using a credit card makes me wait too long. And, BTW, WTF needs to use a credit card for a $7 purchase? >>

I do... The reason is because I can use that card and use my money effectively. Rather than be forced to take out my cash from the ATM in $10 or $20 increments... I can take out exactly what it cost me at the register to eat.

With online banking and debit cards I only write one check a month for my rent and that's because it takes 5 days for my bank to get a check to the townhomes. People who use checks at supermarkets really urk me.

Ah, checks can be mailed, written in advance, given as deposit, and most importantly, juggled. Debit cards aren't nearly as much fun or useful.

:)
>>

Well Subway would need the check dated right hten - plus it seems that in the US the date on the check is meaningless. It's illegal to cash a check before the date in Canada and maybe down here too but it doesn't seem to affect anybody. The couple times I've tried it they cash it as soon as they get it.

BTW guys I don't think this 45 year old woman was interested in "foiling government tracking" ;)

I do. Sometimes I get to work an realize I forgot to stop at the ATM for cash. There are no ATM's within 10 miles of where I work (why I have no idea), but luckily I have my debit card, and most lunch places around here will accept that. Of course if I have cash on me, I'll always pay with that.

When I use a check I usually try to be polite about it. I try and have everything but the amount written by the time it's my turn to checkout. I don't update the register because I never balance my checkbook anyway. :)

<< in the US the federal gov't clears the checks >>

Not true... the bank that the check originates from does the clearing not the fed... plus usually after clearing the check it is filmed then destroyed after a certain amount of time.

You people need to plan better. I never even use ATMs at all, but I make sure that I have enough cash around for daily expenses. An unplanned expense? Sure, I can understand whipping out the plastic. But, it's not like you don't know you're going to eat every day.

Another thing...

Here in Utah, it's only been within the last year that you've been able to use cards ANYWHERE.

why did you go to subway anyway. eeeewwwww. gotta get Port of Subs. best subs ever.

ok ok on topic, i have a checkbook, only use it to pay bills. i haven't written a check other than for bills in about two years. i don't carry much cash either. Debit card for everything. in AZ about the only places that accept checks anymore are grocery stores, and walgreens. (thats because all the snowbirds and old people shop there)

I only use checks to buy stuff at Sam's. Other than that I pay everything via CC, debit cards, or online banking. :)

EDIT: Skoorb, I know what you mean its very annoying. It's mostly women and the elderly though. Always happens at the supermarket or walmart express lanes. Takes them about 10 minutes to go throught the whole proceed. Takes me about 30 seconds with my debit card. In fact, I beat the person in front of me to the door. :)

Well, one reason.. although illegal, is that people simply do not have the cash in the account to use just yet... so they write a check that will not clear their account until a couple of days later which is after they have been paid and the cash is safely in their account.

With the way things are going now, you can;t count on that. Checks can be cleared electronically in very little time now. Not like the 5-7 days it used to be.

Not true... the bank that the check originates from does the clearing not the fed... plus usually after clearing the check it is filmed then destroyed after a certain amount of time.

There are several clearing facilities scattered through the country. Guess who those are run by......

"Every day, businesses and individuals deposit millions of checks at banks. When a bank receives a check for deposit, it credits the account of the check depositor on a provisional basis, and then collects the funds from the bank upon which the check is drawn. Depository institutions transfer many of their checks to Federal Reserve Banks for collection, rather than sort all the checks and send each one back to the bank it was drawn upon for settlement. Federal Reserve Banks then pay the depositing banks for the total amount of the checks. The Federal Reserve Banks then collect funds from the banks on which they are drawn. "

Dear Skoorb:

If you dont like the policy that subway has of accepting checks, then complain to them. If they take it as legal tender, then bite your tongue and suck it down. If it really bothered you, you could always offer to pay for the guy's lunch by quickly whipping out your debit card and doing the guy a favor.

Unfortunately for you, the person ahead of you is free to pay by check, credit card (why anyone would pay for food with credit card is beyond me), debit card, pennies, dimes, paper money, etc.

I regularly pay by check because it leaves a nice paper trail for my wife. She does the books and simply grabs my checkbook, pulls the carbon copy out, and does the books. I have a tendency to throw away receipts or they get lost in my car/pockets, etc, so I dont like to use the debit card. Not only that, but it can take up to 2-3 days for it to show in our account which I think is rediculous since its an electronic transfer.

Debit cards also suck because you have to remember the stinking PIN every time. I dont know about you, but I have problems remembering my address, let alone a PIN I would use 3-4 times a week maximum.

If you were really in that much of a hurry to get your food and get out of there, maybe you should have budgeted your time more carefully and gotten there earlier? Are you also the person who gripes at goodyear or michelin when you get a flat tire and are late for work, simply because you did not leave enough time for emergencies like that?

It's all about planning.

Have a greate day skoorb, jerboy, eakers, or whatever your name is. You all sound alike anyway, either trying to be cute or griping about the most miniscule things that really dont matter anyway.

gotta run. RL takes precedence over this board.

I'm just wondering about all the people (including me) who were drawn in here by the title of this thread, thinking it was addressed to them.

And here I was standing in line behind this jerk yesterday who decides to use his credit card to pay for his subway...Why can't he use cash like anyone else. So we have for the cashier to swipe the card, key in the amount, wait for the approval to transmit, etc., etc. What's wrong with just using real money and not holding up the rest of us???

for the 10% of banks that make up 90% of the industry the check is written on funds held at the federal reserve. and the fed charges some money, about $5 i think, per cleared check. which is part of why the fed is independent of congress's budgetary discretion.
