It sucks because even though I think Trump is basically a disaster, we really have been (and will be) in a terrible situation with regards to China. Their hybrid combo of Totalitarian Government, Pseudo Capitalist Economics, and completely ludicrous corruption and lack of interest in basically any honest ways of doing business makes for a lose/lose with regards to trade. We'd have been better off if Nixon kept his funky ass home and we never engaged with them in any respect at all.

Yeah, maybe we'd have more expensive toys, electronics, etc. But we wouldn't be catastrophically noosed up neck to neck with the bastards (the govt and business culture, not the people themselves) where any struggle just makes things worse, and we're irretrievably dependent on keeping the flow going. It's just a slow ride to bankruptcy.

the trade deficit doesn't actually meaning you're going into debt though. The only debt we actually owe China is debt in the form of treasury bills.

But I do agree that the economic playing field isn't level. Starting a trade war wasn't the solution. TPP would have given us a much better negotiating position.

Can't have that because, you know, the darkie put it in place.

the sad part is killing TPP hurt farmers too.

CNN interviewed a farmer who expanded his farm expecting TPP go to through, because he'd be able to sell to a wider market. so much for that. on the one hand, i felt bad for him. on the other, he voted for trump and didn't seem intent on changing that.
and this farmer interviewed by cnn - despite getting screwed by trump on the trade war - still seems intent on voting for trump again. "unless they come up with a better alternative" - yeah someone sane who isn't going to destroy your livelihood (a democrat, gasp!)

TPP was about protecting corporate profits not people because the idiots in charge finally realized that China was playing them all this time, just like you all got played by Clinton and Obama whose sales pitch on free trade agreements was to pretend that somehow they were for the people not the corporations.

What do you propose as a solution?

It just goes back to the impression he left on the debate stage VS Clinton in 2016.
Everything he said was a lie. Just drilling down a list of empty promises.
