Deadlifting on leg day or back day?

I've got a lot of friends at my gym and all of them do their deadlifts on different days, for the ones with routines similar to mine (dedicating one day to one muscle group) their deadlifting is done either on legs or back days.

For me, I do mine on my back day (also my bicep day). Does this make any impact on my leg day, two days later? Does it matter which day I do it on, back or legs? If it makes any difference I do straight leg deadlifts.

It does make a difference. Straight legged deadlifts target your hamstrings more strongly, which makes them a leg exercise; standard deads target your erector spinae more strongly, making them a back exercise. Now, this doesn't mean that you have to do them on "back day" or "legs day."

I generally do deadlifts with back exercises....not always.

I just don't do deadlift and squat on the same day.

I think this is the best piece of advice. Both of these exercises make extensive use of your back and leg muscles, and will naturally interfere with each other. If you're doing a split routine, you have the luxury of splitting them up, which will let you give 100% on each. I assume you squat on leg day, so it probably makes sense to do deadlift on back day, with as many days in between them (for recovery) as possible.

I do conventional deadlifts on deadlift day with added lat, and ab work.
Stiff legged deadlifts as mentioned tend to target the hams, so if I did them I'd do them on leg day after squats - or preferably I'd do good mornings with stiff legs instead of the stiff legged deads after squats.

Why not both days?

Deadlift is great and a few days spacing is enough.

For most people (with the exception of pure beginners) deadlifting is too demanding on their CNS to perform more than once a week.

That's why in Starting Strength routine, you do it three times in a span of two weeks. Even then, you're also only doing 1x5. Using some type of deadlift variation on another day during the week is fine (such as RDL's) though. Do RDL's as an accessory movement to hit the hamstrings after squats and use deadlifts on back day as the main movement.

I personally will throw in stiff-leg dead-lifts on leg day after squats, with those two being my main exercises and taking up the largest chunk of my training time. I do standard dead-lifts on back day either as my first exercise, or after I've warmed up a bit with some light lat pull-downs.

I also tend to avoid doing both straight-leg and standard dead-lifts in the same week; I'll usually just alternate between the two.

Edit: Haha, sorry for the super-resurrection. Linked here from the newer version of this topic, and replied in the wrong thread. Score.
