Dang, tempting to void my warranty and put one in my MSI Wind netbook... this, or one of those $99 320GB 7200RPM drives.
linux:/home/dave # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

Newbie question, what would the space be useful for on a PS3?
Cheap PS3 Upgrade
Pros: Solid, cheap PS3 hard drive replacement.
No problem installing in my PlayStation.
Cons: Full capacity is 465gb but only 413gb after formatting. How can you lose 52gb during a format?
Other Thoughts: Good drive but no way am I going to give it 5 stars with a 52gb loss.

According to the Newegg reviews...

Response to Danny Boy
Pros: I have not yet purchased this drive however plan to do so quite soon to replace the 80GB Drive from my MGS4 Edition PS3.
This is in reponse to Danny Boys -1 Egg. The drive drops down to 465gigs formatted another bit is taken from the PS3 OS and it is not the fault of the drive however the playstation hardware itself. Hence why it says 465gigs total and only 413 available. The drive does have a formatted capacity of 465gigs but only 413 gigs remain after the os is installed, does it seem odd to me. Yes it does, but that is not the fault of the drive it is of the PS3.
Cons: None, can't wait to get.

Sounds like the PS3 OS is using up the 52GB space - same as any OS would - but's that's just an 'educated guess' based on other reviews I've read over there...![]()

Your guess is wrong. A fresh 80GB PS3 has 74GB of actual HD capacity and 64GB of free space, which means 10GB is used for the PS3 OS. There's something missing from the newegg review.

500GB for my PS3
I bought this hard drive to upgrade my PS 3, and I am completely satisfied. Installation was incredibly easy, and when I turned the PS 3 back on, it only took a few seconds to reformat. I now have about 413GB of free space to fill up!
