From reading 'the reviews', I'm getting the sense that this drive is a lumbering giant - which is fine, if you *need* a half-terabyte mobile HD, but...

I was looking for more performance and less power consumption. Capacity is a tertiary issue for me!

I *think* I'm gonna wait for a 'Hot Deal' on a 4th Gen Hitachi Travelstar 7K320.

Anybody here actually running one of these 500GB Samsungs?!?!?

I bought it last week when I didn't think the price would go down. It seems like a good performer. I just installed openSuSE on my thinkpad instead of Windows so I can give you the hdparm -Tt output. This is with a T7250 and 1GB of ram and is while its running other programs like Vuze.

linux:/home/dave # hdparm -Tt /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1846 MB in 2.00 seconds = 923.37 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 204 MB in 3.04 seconds = 67.11 MB/sec

According to the Newegg reviews...

Cheap PS3 Upgrade

Pros: Solid, cheap PS3 hard drive replacement.
No problem installing in my PlayStation.

Cons: Full capacity is 465gb but only 413gb after formatting. How can you lose 52gb during a format?

Other Thoughts: Good drive but no way am I going to give it 5 stars with a 52gb loss.

Pros: I have not yet purchased this drive however plan to do so quite soon to replace the 80GB Drive from my MGS4 Edition PS3.

This is in reponse to Danny Boys -1 Egg. The drive drops down to 465gigs formatted another bit is taken from the PS3 OS and it is not the fault of the drive however the playstation hardware itself. Hence why it says 465gigs total and only 413 available. The drive does have a formatted capacity of 465gigs but only 413 gigs remain after the os is installed, does it seem odd to me. Yes it does, but that is not the fault of the drive it is of the PS3.

Cons: None, can't wait to get.

Your guess is wrong. A fresh 80GB PS3 has 74GB of actual HD capacity and 64GB of free space, which means 10GB is used for the PS3 OS. There's something missing from the newegg review.

I don't think this is a "lumbering giant" but it is somewhat slower than the latest 7200 rpm drives. I'm holding out for Seagate's 500GB @ 7200 rpm although I probably don't require the extra storage.

It's not a loss of 52GB. For drive storage, 1GB = 1 billion bytes. For the rest of computing which measures in binary, 1GB = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes.

Same here. I'm going to void it anyway by putting in an extra gig of ram but I don't really need 500GB on that thing.

I bought this hard drive to upgrade my PS 3, and I am completely satisfied. Installation was incredibly easy, and when I turned the PS 3 back on, it only took a few seconds to reformat. I now have about 413GB of free space to fill up!

What's your guess?

The ps3 likely uses a certain percent of space for its own purposes. caching? I posted this when I upgraded my 40gb to 250gb drive late last year.

I only had 205gb out of 235gb available on a freshly installed drive. Sony has never really posted what its reserving the space for.
