i don't believe formatting robs you of space, it's just that hard drive manufacturers lied about the amount of space on the drive in the first place.

Yay! My drive shipped too! I ordered Saturday sometime, around noon-ish I think. December 31 really came early this year.... Oh, it wa a retail drive, btw.

I don't know why they do it, but HD manufacturers emply the metric system. 1MB equaling 1000Kbyte instead of 1024. That is why you get "robbed". The OS, any OS, uses the "correct" 1024 Kbytes to a MB.

They're not exactly lying, they're just using funny math. HD manufacturers say 1 Gigabyte = 1,000 Megabytes, 1 Megabyte = 1,000 Kilobytes, 1 Kilobyte = 1,000 Bytes. So, when they say their drives are 120 Gigabytes, they're saying 1,200,000,000,000 Bytes. However, in the computer, 1 Gigabyte = 1,024 Megabytes, 1 Megabyte = 1,024 Kilobytes, 1 Kilobyte = 1,024 Bytes. So, to the computer, 120 Gigabytes = 1,319,413,953,331 Bytes. The formatting process does use some of the available space, but it's not nearly as much as it looks like you're losing.

If you get the latest version of the rebate (see link up just about 20 or so posts), it states on there that the rebate will be honored up to 30 days from shipment, not from your order date.

I oredered the OEM around 2 AM on the 12 and the Retail about 2 PM on the 12th and have no info on shipping yet

Once again I feel ripped off.

I ordered 10-11 @ 8:30pm. That next week they had my order on hold. I called and then they said my CC didn't have the funds. Not true, but anyway, we fixed the problem and they had to cancel the old order and create a new one. Well the new one was created way late from the rebate so they gave me an instant $100 off, however my ship date was pushed to 1-10-03.

I'm pissed cause I ordered relatively early and people are getting their drives and now I'm in the back of the line. 🙁

Given that many of us that ordered the retail drive that were told 12/31 for our ship dates (myself included), and they have shipped already (as mine has), I don't think you will actually have to wait that long to get it. Plus, since you got the $100 credit, you will probably get your drive, at the "final" price, long before we collect on our rebates...

Ok, so I ordered 3 of these babies under 2 different profiles. At first I ordered an OEM drive (before anyone knew it was OEM) early Friday morning. Then on the same profile I ordered a retail drive. I called to cancel the retail drive but it looks like they either cancelled the OEM or didn't cancel either, because it says my retail drive shipped. The other retail drive I ordered with my other profile is still "in production".

I'm sorry.. but I dont see that as being greedy. If he needed 3 drives, thats cool. It's not going to keep you and me from getting ours.

OK. Looks like I'm number 900. Whoopie! I ordered on the afternoon of the last day (10/13) and it was at my door late afternoon on Tuesday the 15th. I thought it was the retail but I guess I goofed and I got the OEM. It appears to be 2 platter and under 3 year warranty through WD. I called a bunch of times, sent a private email to Cathy of the Dell Forums, and I don't know what it was but they credited me the rebate, minus tax ($108 or so). I was told by a CSR I could check status at dellcustomercare.com and I did and it set up an email to me that came shortly and said I was indeed being credited. Haven't checked, but I'm sure not sweating it now. A letter came a couple days ago saying NOT AN INVOICE, and it was a sort of invoice and it was for $158 + tax. Today I got another NOT AN INVOICE letter saying that I was being credited $100 + the extra tax I'd paid.
