Dead Rising 2 Case Zero

Anyone else playing this? Its pretty neat, but it doesn't have the same "fun factor" that i remember from the first one. I think the load times are what are killing it for me...well that and the damn saves. I forgot to save and lost like an hour of play time. Whats wrong with good old fashioned auto saves?

Keep in mind this isn't exactly a full game either. Sounds to me like it's like GT5: Prologue in that it gives you a solid taste of what's to come, but more than a demo could offer.

Lol someone has been spoiled with super easy auto save checkpoint garbage. Good thing I grew up in the beat the game or start over era. Well, that and "Continue for another couple quarters?"

To each his own. I for one welcome autosaves and think you have to be a masochist to want to play a game where you die all the time and have to restart over and over. Which is why I'm not interested in Dead Rising or DR2.

I think it's worth $5.

As someone who's tried to play through DR1 3 times now and failed, I love this! It doesnt feel as clunky, the text is no longer micro, the weapon-combo system is very rewarding and fighting off the (seemingly) endless amounts of zombies is still great fun. Oh, and no Otis calling you ever 4 minutes!

The save system is suppose to be there to build tension--and I think it does, along with some frustration--but at least we have more than 1 save spot now. Auto saving would be nice I agree, but I suppose having a fair amount of save spots (bathrooms) in the epiloge helps, so just be sure to save often--you have to be anal about it, I think, to make it work.

Really looking forward to DR2, like a lot.

What do you mean more than one save spot now? You could always save in the bathrooms before...

I like it a lot. They polished away some big annoyances from the original:
  • Wonky controls like, when aiming in DR, using X to throw/fire and switching the look stick from RS to LS – which is especially bad considering that the camera mode used standard FPS stick layout. Standard use of LT=zoom, RT=fire is 10x better.
  • Stupid survivors – I didn't have much trouble with them here, but I wasn't leading 6-person tour groups.
  • Otis's calls – 'nuf said

The difficulty seemed a little low to me, but I'm a DR veteran. I think it's a good decision to reel players in, as I think the DR demo was just like the full game, but without the benefit of leveling.

I don't like that the Leaderboards track only cumulative PP, while DR tracked only single-game PP. Ideally, it would have both to honor the grinders and the optimizers.

I think the load times are what are killing it for me...well that and the damn saves. I forgot to save and lost like an hour of play time.
The first time I tried to start a game, I let it sit on the loading screen for 5 minutes before I quit to Dashboard. Since then, the load times have been acceptable, but they're not something I'm picky about. On my first play-through, I deliberately reloaded a few times to do exploring off the in-game clock.

I like it, definitely thought it was worth $5. It's not just a demo. I never played the original but this one seems a lot better than what I saw of the first one.

Also was the story in the first one so serious? I liked what was going on in DR2:C0 but I was under the impression the original had no story.

There's a story, I'm not going to spoil it, but I didn't think it was that good. Fairly generic stuff for the most part.

I probably should have said save "slots" instead of save "spots".

Oh, I see what you mean now. I don't even recall how many slots were available in the original. I thought only one? I only ever had one going at a time for my Gametag, but I am the only person who uses my Xbox. That might be annoying if multiple people use the same Xbox / GT.

Agreed. That's the main reason why I quit Dead Rising after a few hours of play. I couldn't stand the save system. For me, it's just not any fun to have to repeat an hour of gameplay because I never went to the save bathroom. I hate games that do that.

Sometimes I only have about 30 minutes to play and I want to be able to quit when I need to (sometimes right away if necessary).

Sounds like the problems I had with the Metroid Prime series. I recall it being worse in 3 than in the first one (didn't play Metroid Prime 2), but both of them required a lot of time to go between save points. Whenever I got to one, I felt the urge to stop playing for fear of getting stuck between save points.

That's not a good thing. Game designers shouldn't make gamers want to stop playing.

Played through Case Zero, it was alright. I'll have to play through again to get a couple of the achievements. I felt very rushed during the game, and that's never a good thing. I can see how the story demands it, but it still increases the annoyance factor. They give you a lot of things to do, and no time to do it. That's a stressful situation, not an enjoyable one.

Like how is a person supposed to experiment with all of the "wrench items" and try making new combo weapons while the clock is constantly ticking?

There was one playthrough I had to restart because I was trying to figure out how to get into the hunting store, and that took me a while so the kid died. During that time, I stumbled across a magazine that I could hold in my inventory in some store that there was no reason to go in.

Those are the kinds of nice surprises that get totally lost when there's a timer going and you have to focus on rushing to get done those things which are required just to keep playing.

It's why I despised the first Pikmin. What should have been a fun game was wrecked because of the timer.

Spoiled? 🙄

I'm glad we've moved beyond the point where the reward is only given to eight year olds with the patience to stare at a screen for 14 hours.

Yeah, this is how I feel as well. The being timed issue really bugs me.

Because having an auto save before every decision you make in a game isn't being spoiled... "Oh I messed up, let me restart 5 seconds before that happened." Risk VS reward is what limited saves are all about. And I highly doubt any 8 year old could play through Sonic 2.

Damn, i was about to jump on this game because i played the trial and it didn't have a timer. I might have to pass as i didn't like the first dead risings timer at all.

Random Boss battles + shitty save system = fail.

So true...they don't have to have auto save ALL the time, but particularly for things like this when you have no idea you're about to fight a boss they really should save it then for you.

I finally finished the demo. The first time I failed and didnt get the last piece of the motorcycle. I got it all the second time, but i wouldnt have been able to had i not already known where to go and what to do. It seems almost impossible to beat it on the first try in the small amount of time they give you without cheating. I dont like that and i hope the real game gets rid of the time limit.

The save system i could get used to even if i dont like it. The timer I will never like and if its in the main game i dont think ill get this one. It just takes the fun of roaming around and playing with weapons out of the game.
