Dead processor? Overheated? *update* ...Hopefully the last...

Last night my computer started beeping as if the temporature alarm was going off while I was playing Need for Speed Underground.... then Windows blue screened. When I turn the computer on now its either not displaying to the monitor and beeping the temporature alarm signal or it will come up for about 10 seconds and lock up and then start beeping. Has anyone overheated a processor and had this issue before?

Edit: *Update* Well....I think its the motherboard.... I also checked to make sure it wasn't the power supply but another one didn't work either. It still has the siren going off even though the processor works fine on another mobo.

Soooo... I haven't looked in a while. What is a good motherboard that can replace mine? I need something that supports a 400mhz FSB (1.6ghz Northwood) processor and if possible would support an 800mhz FSB for me to upgrade the processor later to one with HT.

Edit: *Update 2*.....got the new motherboard and its still locking up!!! :*( Ive tried other parts out on another computer and they work just fine. Processor is fine, RAM is fine, .....no more "Overclocking failure" codes on the new mobo at least. But its still locking up in the BIOS sometimes. I noticed something wierd with the new mobo is that when I have the Hard Drive hooked up and go into the BIOS, some of the menus have chopped off characters on words. Ive checked for bent pins on the HD and mobo and changed the IDE cable out too. Ive got the hard drive here at my work now running tests on it and nothing weird is showing up. Its running fine here on this other computer. WTF?? Hep Hep!

Edit: *Update 3* .... I think I may have found the problem. I brought down another processor (Celeron Northwood) and used the 1.6 P4's Fan/Heatsink. (Unfortunately I don't have another Fan/Heatsink to try) When I booted it up it started giving out an alarm like it was with the motherboard. High pitch low pitch...over and over like a siren. So I install the P4 back in and it works fine, but then I try unplugging the fan and booted it again and the siren went off again. Plug the fan back in and its fine again. Has anyone had a CPU fan that has done this before??? After leaving the system on for a while it will start its locking up problem and it won't be fixed until I reseat the processor again. In the other motherboard it would lock up/blue screen after a while and then Siren if I would start it up too soon again. In it too I would unplug everything and plug it back in and it would work for a while and start doing the same thing again and would also have missing characters display in the BIOS. Would overheated CPU cause the missing characters too? The fan in the bios reports 2500 RPM for the retail intel fan.

Ive had it open. Looks fine. The problem is, I think the desk we put it in has hardly any air flow.... I just wondered if a symptom of it overheating would cause it to overheat even easier....like within a minute now. I think Ill scrap off the thermal pad and put some grease on it later just to reseat it and give it a better contact to the heatsink. What is good for getting the old stuff off the processor and heatsink?

99% Isopropyl Alcohol

btw... is your CPU fan working? Is it plugged in properly?

Yep, its working fine and pulling hard. System either locks up while POSTing or it won't post and all and beeps the temperature alarm.

Ok, I took off the old goo and put on some new. It seems to have helped it stay up for a minute instead of just 10 seconds. I also took the processor with me to another system and it works fine. I put a good load on it and let it go for a long while with no lock ups. Maybe the chipset on the motherboard is fried instead???

Also at home after the system locked up a few times I noticed the power light was flashing its green instead of staying solid after I hit the reset button and it came back on. It would just have a blank screen with the green light flashing and eventually that alarm would go off again after a few minutes.

Nail polish remover works wonders, too.

Problem with nail polish remover (Acetone) is that it dissolves many kinds of plastics. So its kind of risky to work with...

Isopropyl Alcohol doesnt do that...

Are you sure it's a temp alarm? Just a thought but I had somewhat similar problems last month. When swapping ram I used a faster ram (low latency pc3200) to test, it changed the dram timings in the bios (automatically) and didn't auto adjust back for lower quality pc2700. Needless until I sorted that out it was a mess. Check ram settings in bios (also tempature). May need to clear cmos.

BTW, have tried removing the side panel on case and using a fan to blow air in the computer?

Video card ? The chopped characters would suggest that.

Thats what I thought too ....but the chopped characters only show up in the BIOS when the Hard Drive is plugged in. Im wondering now if maybe the power plug that I have going to the Hard Drive may not be supplying the correct voltage to the Hard Drive. Not all characters were chopped down. Just certain ones....and it would be the same characters as before. Such as the Floppy Drive Controller Enable or Disable would be "F" and just "E" or D"

and nail polish remover has that annoying scented smell. Prolly leaves some residue when it evaporates.

Power supply? If LED is blinking, system hangs before it's booted. Other parts work fine, and you've swapped mobo.

Maybe when you plug in the HDD it draws even more power, b/c if I'm not mistaken it draws from the same line as your video.

Oops, in the time it took me to read the thread during class, someone else posted.

The power supply was the very first thing I tried changing out back when the Siren kept going off with the other motherboard.....Maybe the Power Supply fried the previous motherboard and is giving out bad voltages?? Anyone know if I can use a Voltage meter to check it ok? I think my cousin has one.
