Anyone pick it up yet and have some first impressions? IGN gave it a 9.0, so I'm curious if it's lived up to the hype

You need an Xbox 360 before you can play DOA4. :|

This is the only title - other than PGR3 - that appeals to me of the launch titles, so I'm gonna stick to my old Xbox and the big stack of games I've already got and get a 360 next year when/if the price drops and the SW gets cheaper. $60 is a ripoff. I'll play the X-Men Legends I bought for $9 on clearance, thank you very much.

Dead or Alive 4 Gamespot Review

Tecmo's long-running fighting game series hits the Xbox 360 with its best installment to date, complete with plenty of complex and interesting characters, outstandingly good visuals, and great online play.

The Good: Finely tuned, fast-paced fighting action expertly combines depth and accessibility; big selection of well-designed characters means there's a fighter for everyone; great online play provides near-limitless challenge for competitive players; compelling unlockable extras and achievements; gorgeous presentation.

The Bad: A few graphical flaws; online lobby system is cute but feels needlessly tacked on; some stability and lag issues when playing online.

Gameplay 9
Graphics 9
Sound 8
Value 8
Tilt 9

Overall Score 8.8

Got it yesterday and it is a great addition to the DOA series. The online play was fun but laggy in about a quarter of my games.

It's great. The best one yet. The new counter system is challenging, the graphics are awesome (although they gave the hair too much "weight"), and it's smooth as butter.

it might be just me, but i don't like it much at all yet.

i've put about 4-5 hours into it (picked it up today) and it is just a button masher. blocking is useless in the game for the most part. imho it is over hyped BIG time. I will give it several more hours, but so far it kinda sucks.

Sounds like you have not played against a human yet.

I picked it up for the eye candy, expecting to be dissapointed... but the online mode takes this game above and beyond. I really cant get enough of it... in fact, my thumb is sore from me playing it for the past 3 hours or so.

I played it...it just looks better..same basic gameplay. Its not a ground breaking game and I dont think it makes the xbox360 look any better

It's a fighter, two people go at it to kick the crap out of each other... of course it's the same 'basic' gameplay. If you get into it more, you'll see that it has changed a lot from DOA3.

It's far from a button masher. If you know what you are doing, a button masher will rarely ever win against you. It's an excellent game, assuming you liked the DOA series, if you didn't - DON'T BUY THIS ONE.

Also, visually it's hard to tell a difference (except for the fighting environments) unless you have a decent HDTV.

I tell you the single-player Survival and Timed modes are tough as hell too. There's no way you can be successful just button-mashing in those.

in story mode you can button mash your way thorugh the end guy like nothing.

story mode in this game is totally horrible and the only reason i'm doing it is because i have to in order to unlock chars/outfits.

online play is great, i will agree. so far most matches haven't been too laggy, but when they are, the game is just retarded.

ovreall:

pros: graphics are great, animation is good (though everything seems to clip into cloths when it should have collision detection on the cloths). online play against real people is cool, playing fields are even (when it isn't lagging like hell)

cons: story mode just blows, all single player aspects suck except the sparring mode when you can practice against the CPU in different modes (including standing still). this is very helpful. one huge con is that the computer counters just about every single damned thing you do and will destroy you in the process. i am only able to land about 10% of the counters i actually try for because the computer is so fast and the window is so small. most of the time they end up countering my counter (because i'm trying to counter their move they just did and the window is way over, leaving me open).
my final bug about the game is the counter/blocking system. the ONLY way you can counter/block a move is if you match if the attack is high medium or low. it is VERY hard to tell due to the graphics being so good and the motions being so fluid. most of the time you just have to guess and you really don't know if the attach that was landed was medium/high/low.

bottom line - single player blows, xbox live is thumbs up. while i can't say if the high reviews this has been getting is due to the online aspect only, i sure cant see them from the single player game vs. the cpu.

i'd give it an 8.0/10
