I just received my order of Norton SystemWorks Professional 2003 for $10.90 shipped (free ground shipping) that I ordered from these guys. I wanted to make sure I received it before I posted it as a hot deal, since I had never ordered from these guys :) I also wanted to confirm it had the 1 year antivirus, since there have been rumors in the past about a 90 day oem av version. I ordered 3 copies for various computers around the house, and I also ordered a copy of PowerDVD 4 for under $5. The Professional version includes Norton Ghost which is pretty handy. I've already used it a couple times both to backup, and to transfer files on the hard drive to one of those 120 gig WD SE ones that I picked up for $80 out the door at best buy :) I also like the fairly recent Windows Ghost Explorer so you can explore and extract some files from within the ghost image without having to reboot in dos.

Note that these are CD only, no retail box (i.e. OEM). However this copy of Norton installs with ONE YEAR (bolded for those who missed this part and posted about it ;) ) antivirus just like the retail version and doesn't ask for a serial number, so there's really no differance between that and the retail (the manuals are all on the CD anyway). If you really wanted to get more time out of it than that, you could always reformat and reinstall windows after a year. Alternatively I think Norton charges $10 for a year extension, although by this time next year you can probably get the 2004 edition for $15 ;)

BTW, I didn't find these guys from a spam email like some of the other posts about some of these software deals. I REFUSE to deal with any company that spams, I found these guys on Pricewatch. They use USPS with delivery confirmation for shipping, so it took a week or two for me to receive it after I ordered (ordered May 22, received June 2).

just an FYI about Norton Systemworks 2K3 for me...
a virus WAS detected on my system by this software, but the software couldn't do anything for it, couldn't quarantine it, couldn't delete it. I eventually had to reformat just to rid myself of it.

Which one? And did you update the virus scanner? It usually takes several updates with reboots to get it all fully updated.
Also, some of the larger virus companies like norton and symantec maintain a database of viruses along with complete information on how to manually remove them. Did you look into that?

I've never really had viruses on my main computer, but I installed one copy I bought on my Grandma's a while ago since she always opens attachments and sure enough she had one or two in a few hundred infected files. It seemed to clean it up pretty good.

Sometimes Norton Antivirus would catch a virus but wasn't able to totally delete it. But don't freak out, reboot your computer and try deleting again. If it is finding the virus after the fact, that is a different story.

I have never had Norton Antivirus not be able to quarantine a virus. Ever. I have been using it for many many years.

You guys must not be allowing your updates to keep things current.

This is a great deal. As long as these guys are not selling "backup" copies.

Nope, not as far as I can tell. Its the real thing. No handwritten label or sticker. Its printed like any other normal retail CD label. Thats one of the reasons I wanted to wait to post this deal until I actually received the stuff, I wanted to make sure it was legit. If you really want I can take a pic of it and email it to you.

When Norton finds a virus it cannot clean then it was on the system prior to NSW installation or you received an infected file prior to them developing a fix which usually is less than 36 hours. Even then - did you try to use an extraction tool?

I had the same problem ,detected virus but no action available.
then I tried a trial of F_Secure and it was found ,deleted and I was given a hyperlink to a database that explain the virus .

Well its always good to know of an alternative. But I buy norton for more than just antivirus, although thats a big part. I also use ghost and stuff. Personally I've never had trouble with norton and viruses. And like I mentioned earlier, most of the big name virus companies maintain a database of viruses with full information including on how to remove them manually, or special free download extraction tools for those that are hard to remove.

..and it is supposed to have online activation :(...

Why can't they take a page from turbotax's book, they decided to withdraw the activation from future products once they got this years sales numbers, and because of all the people complaining about this years turbo tax activation that restricted it to one computer, and never again on any others (not even if you upgraded). Blah.

after updating 2003 i found a virus. it was in iexplorer.exe and i could not remove it. it infects email and i checked the date on the infected file for when it was last modified and restored my system to a day before the infection and it was removed. the infected email was able to be repaired, so i didn't have to reformat the hard disk.

So SR copied a old clean version of explorer.exe over the infected one? SR must keep copies of all files to be restored as explorer.bak, etc, to keep the virus from infecting both copies like it would if they both had .exe extentions, and in two different folders.

What improvements are there over the 2002 version?

One improvement is that if you have to boot from the CD to find and clean a virus, the virus definition data base of 2003 is at least one year more up to date than 2002.

If you use Ghost, it is also improved, especially when it comes to making Ghost boot disks that will recognize and use firewire and USB drives.

I think the virus checker works a little smoother.

It can now deal with ntfs partitions better, when searching from the cd bootup recovery

Any idea if this has something like Ghost Multicast? I really need the application running on another PC to store the image.

* From what I've read, 2003 will work with XP while 2002 won't.
* The GoBack on SW 2003 Pro is great. It's not the "Deluxe" version, but still very handy.
* I never use an AV program, but the Norton utilities are nice.
* The Pro version does have Ghost as stated before.

* This OEM suite has been priced less than $20 for quite a while now. But $10.90 shipped is the cheapest I've seen.
