dead mobo?

i traded psu with this slightly older amd system and gave it a 250, i also tried testing a chip from another machine to see if it would work and it didnt because it was a sempron and this machine takes athlon only im guessing. when i put the original athlon chip in, the machine sounds as if it will normally boot up, i hear one beep and the hard drive and fans turn on, but that's it. the monitor light stays orange knowing it's plugged in, but doenst go to green indicating a signal is coming through. i tried giving it back the old psu but that didnt help. when i tested the chip in the mobo i did it withut the fan/hs, but i now notice the pc will power off right away if i dont hold the heatsink/fan on hard enough, so i would guess that the overheat feature would of saved it from frying the board. i figured it was the chip, i bought a new one and i get the same. im stuck, could it be the semos battery?

does anyone know what the problem could be before i buy a new mobo?

thanks to anyone willingto help

What I'm reading is the system worked before, you swapped out psus for higher wattage, now nothing works.

If that's the case, my guess would be motherboard. I don't know much about AMD, but the Sempron and Athlon should work the same as long as it's the same socket. Also, you may need a new cpu. You should never run it without the heatsink, it takes only seconds to fry the cpu. You may have gotten lucky and it's undamaged, but the only way to be sure is to try it in a known working system.

hm... the athlon doesnt work in me sempron pc. ill try it in another athlno i think i've got.

p.s. the mobo is m7ncd with nforce2 400 chipset.

What gfx solution are you using?

Have you tried clearing the CMOS yet?

If the mobo is installed in a case, have you checked to make sure there are no shorts to the case? (ex. an extra brass standoff under the mobo). Might lay it on a phonebook and retry using just mobo, cpu (with HS+F), gfx and ram. Of couse hook up KB, mouse and monitor too.

Also make sure the CPU HS fan is plugged into the right mobo header, and wouldn't hurt to reseat components like ram and gfx card (make sure PC is unplugged or PSU is turned off via rocker switch in back).

EDIT: I seem to remember one of my NF2 mobo's having no problem with an old PSU which did not have the 4pin ATX power connector. But might try a PSU that DOES have the 4 pinner.

the mobo has no connection for a 4pin power cable

i checked and the new chip i bought worked in another pc, so that isnt the problem

how do you clear the CMOS?

im going to try removing the motherboard next, that sounds like a good idea

thanks fern

Check your mobo manual and look for jumpers which require shorting to clear the CMOS. Or you can unplug the system off the wall and then remove the CMOS battery located on the mobo. Best way to learn this is through your mobo manual.

resetting the cmos doesnt do anything, also tried taking the mobo out of the case, nothing

i still get the initial beep, hear the hard drive spin, but the comp sounds quiet, like that "chiping being worked" sound is missing i think. i guess im gonig to try at a new mobo now..
