I have yet to get the USB WHS install to work. Can someone tell me which drivers are supposed to be slipstreamed in? This info is nowhere to be found. 🙁

http://rapidshare.com/files/314374525/DOS.zip.html
or
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KEH1WZ1Y

That is the DOS folder in whole. It will install all the drivers you need. Use that in conjunction with:

http://www.wegotserved.com/2008/07/...ttended-windows-home-server-installation-dvd/

and

http://www.wegotserved.com/wiki/ind...r_USB_Flash_Drive_Into_a_Windows_Install_Disk

Follow the instructions exactly and it will work. Note, when you are done with the entire slipstream, make sure you copy the CONTENTS of the entire DOS folder into the i386 folder. There's a note that says the install will BSOD without loading the drivers into the 2nd part of the windows install.

As an update to mine....

I got my SS4200 and got WHS installed last night. I unpacked it, threw in a 2GB stick of RAM, HD, put the Flash Drive in and held down the Reset button while I pushed the power button. Walked off and watched some TV with the wife.

About 45 minutes later I had an up and running WHS server! I ran the updates and now the only issue I'm having is with the webpage and remote admin. For some reason my new router or cable modem isn't forwarding the 80/443/4125 ports to the box correctly. Not sure why, but I didn't spend a lot of time on it last night and i'll take a look at it this afternoon.

Now I'm just waiting on the E2220 I ordered to finish the box off!

Can anyone please tell me the dimensions and weight of the shipping box? (I would need to re-ship, and would like to know the cost.) Many thanks!

I have the box here but can't find my tape measure, but I'd estimate 20"x16"x9" and probably about 25lb ship weight (weight is estimated on the high side).

Where are you guys ordering the Intel E2200 CPU? Trying to see how much those are nowadays (no longer available at the egg). And a 2GB stick of DDR2 is like $40+ now? dang!

E2200s or e45/4600s appear to be ok. I will be trying an E4500 within a week or so. (waiting on a pcie extender to see into the bios).

Actually, gwynethgh please let us know how the E4500 works out for you once you get everything installed, if it works fine I'd rather go for that due to 2MB vs 1MB (on the E2200) cache although both are 2.2GHz so not sure if its a big difference anyways 🙂

Hi countrty2,

I studied the two option 1) EMC with RAID5 and 2) Windows Home Server extensively.
I tried EMC RAID5 and discovered quickly that there are file compatibility issues if you use Windows systems with a Unix based NAS system. Also, many belief that RAID5 with anything bigger than 500GB drives is not reliable due to size of the raid and the amount of striping it needs to do to keep it updated. Also, SS4200 EMC Raid5 is software raid -- SLOW!
Windows Home Server doesn't use RAID but has options to declare a folder to replicate on two different drives in effect giving you full redundancy. Of course, file compatibilty is 100%, supports folder security and is 100% compatible with Windows including Windows SBS 2008 domain server. In addition it has many good streaming capabilities for XBOX, etc. ALso, WHS supports different disk drive sizes for full disk utilization.

Hope this helps!

wouterkcs,
thanks for the reply. Was thinking about getting it and using WHS for storing back images and possible streaming movies to my other computers and mnt.

Managed to get WHS loaded. What an ordeal it was. Worked on it off and on for 2 weeks as time allowed. Made 7 attempts before hitting pay dirt. Put the flash drive in a little baggy with a label and a note saying "Do not Use, Do not destroy".

Now I have a question about WHS. Backing up the PC's appears to be mandentory. Is it possible to turn off the backup feature all together?

TIA

Right click on the computer name and select "Turn off Backup". It's pretty easy.

Glad you got it working and those links were helpful! It is a neat little NAS.

The E2220 is actually 2.4Ghz, but yes it is only 1MB cache. I'm not sure that really matters as all you are really doing with this computer is streaming things and doing backups. It's not like you're gaming or doing any really highly intensive CPU task.

I got my E2220 from eWiz for $50.63 shipped.
