DEAL DEAD

Here is a hot deal:

IBM ThinkPad T23, part number 26478SU:
PIIIM 1.2Ghz CPU, 256MB PC133 SDRAM, 40GB 5400RPM HDD, DVD-Rom Drive, 56K, NIC, Wi-Fi, 14.1" XGA Screen, S3 SuperSavage/IXC 16MB video adapter, Win XPP, 3-year warranty.

Currently on back-order but should be arriving on 06/16 or 06/17. UPS Ground shipping is free. The total came out to $999 for me.

I've owned a T20, a T23 (1.13Ghz model), and now a T40, and I just placed an order for this one. This is a truly excellent laptop.

EDIT: IBM Sells the new version Ultrabay CDRW/DVD Combo Drive [24x10x24] for $250. You can, of course, find it significantly cheaper or look on ebay. This is just in case you have to have a burner.

Wow, looks great. Are Thinkpads known for their reliability or something?
Ive been looking at some Dells, but they strike me as a bit overpriced when compared to the competition, and Ive read in a few places that they arent too reliable either.
Can anybody enlighten me please? 🙂

I have about 5 Thinkpads of various models and generations at home. The build quality and the LCD are the best you can find. Dell and Compaq stuff might be inexpensive, but the quality is nowhere near IBM Thinkpad's. And I must add that trackpoint is superior to those touchpad stuff in terms of movement accuracy and speed; it is pretty intuitive and natural, too.

yah the IBMs are awesome, I have an X21 and before that I had the Dell notebook. The IBM has much better build and just seems solid. It's like a Mercedes and the Dell is a Toyota Tercel. The Dell works, but doesn't feel as good or perform as well as the IBM.

I'd say these Thinkpad T23s for 999 are a steal...

The ThinkPad T23 is of much better build quality than any Dell notebook, ever.

I once threw (not in anger - out of laziness) my old one from my desk chair onto my bed (about five-six yards away), not realizing it might bounce off the bed (duh!). Well, it bounced off and fell straight to the hardwood floor. It was even open when I threw it, so that's how it fell down (the shell wasn't closed). I was so shocked by my stupidity and scared that I couldn't breathe for a while, but the laptop was just fine.

Anyway...these notebooks are pretty darn amazing... That's why I got in on this deal.

can i have your T40 now? 😛

Dell's are rebadged Chinese OEM knockoffs. ThinkPads are truly great machines, especially the T series. The ThinkPad T40 is awesome.

I have this exact machine, and it has been the best laptop I've ever used. It is built VERY well, compact, light, and looks great 🙂 Although, this deal isn't too hot for me, considering I got mine for only 400 dollars about 8 months ago (government auction). But if you need a laptop and don't need every little bell and whistle the new machines have, I'd pick this up in a second.

There used to be people on this forum who worked for IBM that had a "friends and family deal" that they could give their first name and a code number, and IBM's could be bought directly from IBM at a discount, and the employee could earn credit towards purchases themselves. Posting this information on public forums was discouraged by IBM after a short while. However, if any IBM employee would feel comfortable sending me that information using the private message system on this forum, that would be great. I have done it this way before, but it was for a friend, now I am in the market for one in the near future.

LoL

We're not even supposed to be asking for coupons, let alone activities that might be considered illegal... 😉

IgoByte - It's not "illegal" in any stretch of the imagination. There were a number of people who posted this info in the past. One even got the OK from his supervisor. However, if my info is correct, IBM later told empoyee's that the "friends and family" deal was not intended to be posted all over the internet. What the actual rules are today, I have no idea. That's why I am asking.

Those friends and family sells have ok deals, but when I went to them I could've built my system for a lot less. Maybe it was because I was only looking at desktops at that time. IBM people should also get an email or webaddress to view what is in the sale. I think most/all are refurbished stuff, but still great quality.

Anyone know of any nationwide or east coast retail stores who sell the T23 or any IBM Thinkpads, so I can take a look at one before ordering online? 🙂

I live in NJ. Never seen a single IBM in retail stores. But there a plenty of people using them so maybe you can borrow one from your friends/coworkers.

Yes, come to think of it, I haven't seen one in stores for years and years. I think IBM went mail order only. Where in NJ are you? Private Message me if you don't want it to be seen by millions of online folks....🙂

Thinkpads are great, but I have a Latitude C400. All of the people bashing Dells obviously haven't seen this beast - it's built like a tank (I'd dare say it's their best built notebook ever). Magnesium alloy casings sure help🙂

I think IBM Thinkpad's main customers are businesses and education systems, either leases or contract-type purchases. It is pretty difficult to find Thinkpads in retail stores. You can order a Thinkpad through IBM's site, but it will cost you a lot of money if you don't have some sort of discount going with your purchase.
