I switched over to HostPC earlier this year, and so far I have not had any problems. Great service.

nah, I'm thinking of switching my host just wondering what I'm going to give up ... basically I'm downgrading since I'm not using all resources I'm paying for right now.

So just to be clear, I can't setup a forum type thing right?

You can but:

1) The $8.99/yr plan only allows 1 MySQL database, for coppermine and forums you need 2 MySQL DB's. The $15.98/yr plan would be perfect.
2) No vBulletin allowed. However you can still install FREE forums phpBB and InvisionPowerBoard.

cpars,

Reseller accounts are so much better :)

What's your budget and how much disk space/bandwidth do you think you'll need?

I could do with 1 - 1.5GB of space.
Bandwidth I will have to check on, but I know it is minimal (maybe 1-2GB)
Right now i pay $22.75 a month so anything below that is good.
I use this mainly for email domains and my personal experiments so my usage is very limited, I have several Mysql db's and lots a pictures, and very few visitors :)

EDIT: just checked my BW usage for the last two years and never went over 320MB

CW3host.com, great host and no complaints whatsoever but I believe I am just throwing away money with this setup.
Guess i could give away some of this free space and BW to AT members :light:

Was about to ask how many subdomains I get with this package, then I noticed:

200M Disk Space
3G/mo Data Transfer
1 MySQL Database
10 Emails
No CGI
No Installatron Packages
1 Auto Responder
Unlimited Mail forwarding
Web based e-mail
No Mailing lists
Web based statistics
Password protected directories
Unlimited Subdomains
Unlimited FTP accounts....etc

This is the perfect package for me. Thanks RossMAN!

Now to think of a domain name.

For the record, I have heard horror stories from users of Dixiesys, as well as myself personally experience rude customer service from Dixiesys. It seems other have good experience, but if you just happen to run into Dixiesys's customer serivice rep on a bad day, it can be really bad, they yell in their reply basically. So be forewarn. That is what you get for less than 10 buck per year hosting, you got what you paid for.

Why are you sharing your Dixiesys experience with us here?

This Hot Deal involves HostPC which is A DIFFERENT WEB HOST, they are not OWNED or OPERATED by Gary Harris of Dixiesys.

I'd like to check into this email me what domain name you hosted with us so I can check the helpdesk for your tickets. It doesn't do any good to ignore problems if there's one there I'd like to address it for the future.

Just email me off forum at gary@mydixiesys.com I'd PM you but I don't get email notifications on this forum when I get PM's here and I'd hate for it to set for days until I happen to notice the little "1 new message" from your reply :)

You guys got me thinking now. I need something more than a basic webhosting plan. HostPCs Budget B Plan seems mighty tempting. I'm still up in the air between that and an AddAction ThePlan, which can currently be had for $49.90 annually. Its not really apples to apples, so the price difference really isn't much of a factor.

Decisions, decisions...

Also for the record, I personally have experienced the extraordinarily rude customer service and generally poor attitude at Dixiesys.

They were great several years ago when "customer service" was just Gary. However things have changed significantly. In the last year I have steered a number of my friends away from them and their 8-95 affiliate.

The reason this is relevant to a discussion of HostPC is that there is clearly an unusually close relationship between HostPC and Dixiesys. (This is the first time I've ever seen a deal where someone refuses to take business away from one particular competitor.)

One of Gary's tech guys was named Joe. Is the HostPC owner a former Dixiesys customer service guy? That would make Dixiesys' poor customer service record even more relevant.

In any case, watch out if Hostpc plans to emulate Dixiesys' customer service as they expand.

Kevin - Of those two choices, I would definitely go with AddAction.net
If you were considering $15/yr web hosts, then I would go with HostPC.

kyparrish - Unfortunately that seems to be a trend (please read that thread and share your experience)

BobG - I'm sorry to hear that you experienced "extraordinarily rude customer service" :(
I won't lie and say HostPC.com has the best damn customer service in the world (that distinction only belongs to Idologic.com). Fortunately my web hosting works just fine and I rarely have to contact their support. Today I contacted HostPC's support because I forgot my DA password and about my server moving to the new FL data center. Joe responded to my ticket and although my issues were resolved, I think it could have been handled differently (that's all I will say).

As with all services, the saying YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR holds 100% true.

Don't expect Toyota level quality when you're paying Hyundai prices.

As long as HostPC remains fast and reliable (knock on wood) I'll be happy.

RossMan - I followed your links in the Ripplehost thread and discovered that my suspicion about HostPC and Dixiesys customer service being one and the same was corrrect:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=0142a7ada7beeae809913c0b2dc7cacc&threadid=142367&perpage=15&pagenumber=2

.
HostPC says:

"HostPC contracted with Dixiesys to provide 3rd level support over a year ago. If we have an issue with a server that is beyond our tech level, our first line of support is Rackshack (or 2 newer datacenters)... if the problem is not something that RS can address, we turn to the sysadmins at Dixiesys for assistance. Mike and Gary are the two best Linux/Ensim admins available. Part of my contract with them is for me (individually) to provide helpdesk support to their customers. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, which I think works beautifully."

Thanks Gary for the offer. Actually, it happened last year, so the site I was using is no longer here. And if I had known you're the owner when it happened I'd have emailed you about this.
If I make a new site, I"ll take a look at your company again.

Rossman--Sorry you think my post seem unrelated. BobG explained quite clearly why it's an relevant issue. Thanks for pointing that out

I'd like to find a Windows host that offers similar limits on disk space and domain names for a reasonable monthly fee. I have a couple of new domains I might move over though...thanks OP for the info.

hey Kevin, not to confuse things anymore but I was also considering the two choices you've listed, addaction and hostpc. But after talking with the Rossman over the phone this past weekend (truly awesome guy, extremely helpful and patient), I have another option to consider.

I'm thinking about going with their 1GB Reseller plan.

Thank you :)

The web host LordSnailz linked to is DotSimple.com which has a WHT only promo:

$0 setup
$5/mo via paypal only
no obligation or committment

Resellers account
Host unlimited domains
1GB disk space
20GB bandwidth per month
DirectAdmin control panel
Unlimited email, webmail, PHP, MySQL, Perl, CGI and more
FREE personalized name servers (ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com)

I have been a customer of dotsimple.com for about 4 months and so far it has been extremely reliable. Support tickets take anywhere from 2-8 hours for resolution but they are often resolved. John and his team are also available on AIM for tech support.

AddAction and HostPC are more "established" and have been around for several years. If you have an important web site (business or eCommerce) I would go with addaction. Otherwise for a personal, family, hobby, clan site, etc. HostPC, e-rice.net and dotsimple are all excellent choices.

ClanInfamous.com is hosted by dotsimple.com check out Duong's site to see how quickly it loads, etc.

I'm probably going to go with AddAction. The $50 promo seems like a really good deal. I've had a client with them since December and everythings been excellent. They use them for their company email and there's never been any major problems asside from the fact the secretary was checking email at too high of an interval (once a minute). Support is like 24x7 and responces are always within hours, not days. I'm extremely happy, even if its just the email, which is alteast 100 messages a day, and no problems...
