What exactly do you mean reject?

Joe answers it here. Basically, he doesn't want to hurt Gary's business by stealing his customers. Gary has been a great tech-resource for Joe.

I am happy with HostPC, I jumped on an earlier hosting deal that RossMAN posted.

Thanks RM, signed up for the cheap "tidalwave" account. So far it looks like I won't need a bigger plan.

As someone new to this, what happens if your bandwidth goes over the limit? Do they charge a penalty, lock your site, or just charge for an extra gig in the little virtual shop? Don't think it'll be a problem for me, but if a tidalwave account gets slashdot'd, that'd be interesting.

It also should be noted that you get THREE free months instead of two if you are transferring from Ripplehost and were locked out of your account for any reason. Just based on his policies alone, this guy Joe is all right in my book.:D:beer:

===> Edit: Ignore this post ... Firefox said there was an error when I hit post, so I didn't think it went out. I have an updated post right below.

Hi,

Thanks, RossMAN. That's a very informative summary. I am considering setting up a site for my family members to share photos etc., I understand the first 2 steps, and am glad fellow ATers here have said good things about the vendors mentioned. I am hesitant about one thing. Years ago, I subscribed to an ISP who got very unco-operative with forwarding my emails etc., when I decided to switch. Is that a factor to consider with these domain registrars and hosting companies? If I signed up with them now and changed my mind a year or so later, am I likely to have trouble moving my domain name and site to another vendor(s)? Anything I can do to protect myself now from such problems? Any catch phrases to look for in their contracts?

Thanks,
gard

It is very easy and involves 3 basic steps:

1) Register a domain through NameCheap.com, GoDaddy.com or another domain registrar.

2) Get a web host who will host your web site and email. HostPC.com is an excellent choice for a beginner and the DirectAdmin control panel is very easy to use.

3) This is optional. Design the web site using HTML software such as DreamWeaver, etc and/or install forums, image gallery hosting, etc.

I can help you with 1, 2 and 3. Just PM me your AIM or MSN and we'll get started :)

Hi,

Thanks for the very informative summary, RossMAN. I am considering registering a domain for my family and create a site primarily to host photos and perhaps streaming videos of family stuff. I have a couple of questions:

(a) The streaming part is new to me ... Do hostpc.com, ripplehost.com support that? So long as I am within the storage and bandwidth limits of the plan, do I need to do anythingelse special for this?
(b) Years ago I subscribed to an ISP who became unco-operative with email forwarding etc., when I decided to switch to a different provider. Are there issues of that kind I should watch out for here? Namecheap.com says "free transfers" but I guess they mean "transger in" not necessarily "transfer out". If I would like to have the option to switch registrar or host down the line, is there anything I should be doing now to make that process clean? Any catch-phrases to watch out for in contracts etc.,?

Thanks again.

Hi gard,

AFAIK yes they allow streaming as long as:

1) The content is legal (no copyright audio or video)
2) You aren't hogging the server resources (this shouldn't be a problem as long only a few people are streaming at once)
3) You don't go over your resources (3GB bandwidth can be used up very quickly)

(b) Years ago I subscribed to an ISP who became unco-operative with email forwarding etc., when I decided to switch to a different provider. Are there issues of that kind I should watch out for here? Namecheap.com says "free transfers" but I guess they mean "transger in" not necessarily "transfer out". Very good question. It's very important to register your domain with an actual domain registrar (rather than through your web host). It is recommended to go with an ICANN Accredited registrar such as GoDaddy.com which is the #1 domain registrar. (Personally I hate GoDaddy and prefer NameCheap.com - which is NOT ICANN accredited).

Since you've registered your domain with an actual domain registrar, you can switch web hosts whenever you want. So if your web host started having problems, goes out of business or you find a better web host - login to your domain registrar's web site, update the DNS name servers, wait for DNS propogation and you're done!

Yeah, this really sucks a lot for me. I have two small personal domain websites (one already up and another one I wanted to start), and I wanted to buy an extremely cheapy host for both domains. Dixiesys doesn't offer multiple domain hosting on their cheapast plan at 8-95, so to get it there, you have to buy two of the cheapest plans. However, HostPC offers up to 5 domains for just $16 which would just be ideal for me... but unfortunatly now I can't switch.

I also feel like kind of dumb for renewing Dixiesys this past year because I barely used my website. In fact, I almost cancelled it last time on my one year renewal, and now I feel I probably should have, since now I can't switch to very cheap basic hosting at HostPC.

I can completely understand why the decision was made, but I can't help but feel like this plan was not made in the interests of getting users the best deal. Maybe they should merge and have HostPC offer the cheapy deals and Dixiesys the pro deals. Now unfortunatly, it seems that instead of having one of the services, I will have neither. I don't think you're allowed to host one domain on Dixiesys and one on HostPC which I guess I could have lived with.

Has anyone emailed sales@dixiesys.com and asked if Dixie will pricematch to HostPC? I think you might get an interesting answer.

All I've got now is a blog on my site. Any ideas for a site that could utilize about ~400MB of webspace and generate close to 5GB of transfer a month? If I'm paying for it, I might as well use it all!

Forums
Pichosting

That should easily suck up 5GB per month bandwidth.

Just an update: I signed up for the Budget A plan last week, and I have had nothing but a great experience so far. Installatron is great since it incorporates several scripts which I would have had to install manually, like Gallery, email form, etc. I even had a support ticket answered in just over 1 hour on a Sunday!! I am very pleased at this point, and spending in a year what I expected to spend in a month on hosting. Thanks again!

AStar617,

Thanks for sharing your positive experience with HostPC :)

It's amazing the level of customer service they provide considering how cheap it is. I just hope it lasts :)

I'm BUMPing this for Dixiesys customers who might be unhappy with this policy...

Well, I did, and I got a pricematch (technically saved myself $0.01 actually :)).

I was charged for the plan I would have signed up for at HostPC and my old billing cancelled, so it was definitely pricematched. I think my quotas were also adjusted (I'd imagine they would be).

I think it's a win. I get the deal I would have gotten at HostPC, but I don't have move a single byte of data. :D

That is an incredible deal.

Hopefully Gary (who is an AT forums registered member) will post in this thread, confirming they will pricematch/adjust to what HostPC is offering.

 to both Gary and Joe :)

It's a bummer this does not support vbulletin ... anyone have any suggestions for a host provider ..

1Gig of space, 30Gigs of bandwidth, looking for something around $5/month.

We will pricematch the hostpc deals for existing customers of ours in order to offset the fact Joe will not knowingly take an active Dixiesys customer. This will require moving to a Directadmin server if the account isn't already on one and a new billing to be setup and the old canceled. We'll also adjust quotas to match (as closely as possible) the deal from hostpc.

That's what I would do, remember to include:

your domain and username
the hostpc plan you would like to pricematch against

Gary, can you think of anything else?

A recent billing reciept will also be advisable to paste into the ticket, this serves 2 purposes, instantly verifies you as the account holder and allows us to more quickly cancel your old billing since the information is right there in the ticket.

And definitely a ticket is best so we can track the progress and also keeps us from forgetting things we can forget if there's only email back and forth happening. Tickets won't usually be closed until completed whereas email is too easy to overlook
