DEAD; HIJACKED

kinda big for espionage....

for less than $107 you can make yourself a 40GB portable drive (abiet larger in physical size)

$65 for 40gb 5400rpm 2.5" laptop drive
$20 for usb 2.0 2.5" enclosure
----------
$85 for 40gb of FAST portable USB storage

I used newegg.com for approx pricing.

Really? What do you recommend?

Your 40gb portable solution is cool, but it's not quite pocketable. Yeh, it'll fit in your pocket, but it's kind of heavy and it's just not practical to carry around that way. And if you take it out of your pocket to give it to a friend it's gonna look kind of conspicuous and suspicious.

Thumb drives. Up to 2GB now (or maybe more - I haven't kept up). Almost as much storage and a hell of alot smaller. Either that or just emailing files or uploading to a website.

<not that I would know anything about that stuff....>

Anyway...nice deal if insane storang < pocketability. But I'd still perfer an iPod 😉

Those require an external power supply. The featured drive just plugs into a USB port.

2.5" drives run off USB power.

I have this drive and it is great. Don't have to worry about maxing out my space with 5 gigs. I have had no problems so far with the drive even though it is a little bigger then a flash drive For the price it can't be beat for the amount of space it provides. Hope this helps someone thinking about buying this.

which drive and enclosure do you recommend? i checked the site and some of the enclosures do not have measurements..

This is a really nice enclosure, but it used to be about $10 cheaper. Maybe you can find it someplace else.

I have not uses an external enclosure for internal disks in the past. Hence the question. . .

Won't I need to provide power to the hard disk separately? Or does the enclosure take convert (split) the USB connection into a power port and a date port (adapater for hard disk)?

Does it allow "hot swapping" of the hard disk?

How is this different from an USB to IDE convertor like this?

Thanks,

~ JC ~

The USB to IDE adapter that you reference has been called a POS in this other thread

A 2.5" drive, can be powered by USB.
With an enclosure, you can carry the drive around and just hook it up to a USB port to use it.
With an adapter, you will have to carry the drive and the adapter.

Dell Home has this drive for $144 less automatic 10% off on drives (do not know when this expires). The Seagate $30 rebate is valid at Dell (check seagate.rebatestatus.com and "get forms" and enter "USB Pocket Drive" - expires 1 May).

So it will be net $100 (with free shipping)

Nice find. This deal is dead, so maybe you can start a new thread if you want. I think it would be helpful.

Yes, $100 is a very good price for this, if you want the micro-mini size. However, I am leaning toward the Apricorn 40GB EZ Bus USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive, somewhat larger in size, and $15 more (AR), at Outpost. For my purposes, an eight-fold increase in storage for $15, the larger size notwithstanding, is worth it.

that drive still requires you to use a ps2 port for power. isn't there one that just uses one usb cable for data and power? if you're looking at the apricorn, you mind as well get the iogear 40gb ion drive

It does?!!! Didn't realize that. I need a pure USB solution. 🙁 I was hhoping that the Apricorn would be it. The description on Fry's does not quite clarify these things.

For a 40gb usb solution...just get this...

40GB drive $62.50 w/3yr warranty
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144374

2.5" USB Enclosure $13.99
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817155704

For about $80..... you get a 40gb 5400rpm portable, USB powered device.

I don't know about the apricorn solution's power requirements....it may just work fine via usb only.

For other USB enclosures at newegg, use the below link.. I sorted by "Best Rating"

Actually, I recommend NOT engaging in corporate espionage. Unless you like the idea of Federal pound me in the arse prison... Nice find tho, Seagate makes quality components.
