So if you attend this seminar, you get all the software . There is no 1099's either. You'll end up with the full versions of Windows Server® 2008 operating system, Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008, and Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008. It's a great deal for attending a 1 day seminar. It's well worth taking a day off. Good luck everyone !

I agree that in past 'launch event' or similar type events it has generally been non-trial / non-beta type software of various sorts that was given out, though sometimes NFR or download-it-yourself, unsupported, or whatever.

At the small town event of the same kind as you mentioned I went to they had Office & Groove, but NOT Vista, for instance.

I just posted the warning as to what they POSSIBLY might do based on my experience with their promotion on Vista / Office one year ago. Maybe it's a different situation at these launch events. My point was only that they're being non-specific enough in everything I've received from them that you really can't tell for sure what the deal it.

btw, i called the Event Team once more and again i was told "the progs will be Trials and they will expire"....( ! ) maybe the rep was misinformed, maybe not. if any of the lads here is attending the LA event tomorrow (aka Wed 27th), please make a quick "report" once you're back home. :)

That's the one I'm heading too. Which is probably why I got a Final Event Details email. So I'm curious to know if anyone else heading to the LA one got this too.

Thanks for checking, I'm sure you're right about the different events.
There's no Ford / Xbox email / event were I'm going to as far as I've seen.

We'll see what happens from people getting back from events over the next week.

I noticed they have the trial downloads linked right on a special page of the HHH web pages:
http://www.microsoft.com/heroe...downloads/default.mspx

..if it's like the Office give-away event a year ago they'll give out a card with that (or some other) URL on it saying here's your key, and here's where you go to download the software that you can use your key with.

The thing I dislike about trials is that usually I'll have a free day here and there to play with the software, but usually it's pretty sporadic, so it may be months of "real time" before I get the overall free time to use the trial seriously for a few hours / days.

A "90 days of *use time*" trial would be way better than 90 calendar days.

if the progs are really Trials, and they are stamping download links to said trials on the Event's page, that makes them look bad. maybe it will be Trials in a few cities.... or maybe it will be Trials if they run out of RTMs.

i read somewhere at HHH site that the giveaways are rather heavy and therefore the attendee should wait till the end of the event before grabbing his goodies so to avoid look like a loaded camel during the event. funny that i actually treasured the suggestion when i read it.... now i believe i'm better off getting the stuff as soon as i arrive.

The trial download thing could go both ways. At least sometimes you can download a trial but if you enter a full product key you can activate the trial as the real unlimited software. The MS Office / Groove give-away a year ago was like that where you just could get a card with the key on the sticker.

On the other hand I don't think the default state of any of those trials you can download now is to work for 1 year.. more like 90 days or 30 days or whatever. So it could be a key card to activate the 90 day trial software for a duration of 1 year.

Heavy loot huh? Well when I've gone before you're lucky if you get two pieces of folder paper worth of stuff for the give-aways -- like a paper DVD holder or two and a few key sticky labels on 5x6 cards or something. No manuals, software boxes, no discs half of the time. On the other hand there are usually like 100 glossy pages / pamphlets / folders of promotional product literature about various Microsoft and Partner company products / services / etc. you can get. So the marketing literature can easily be enough for somewhere between half of to a full briefcase worth.

I'd get the give-away stuff that looks highly interesting / useful / valuable ASAP, and leave the bulk of the promotional literature to collect / browse / read during lunch / intermissions if your event is that long.

When I've gone before they usually don't give away the main "give-away" stuff until at least a couple hours after the event starts, maybe like lunch time or at the end of the day. Not immediately when you arrive in the morning (usually). Though if your pager goes off 2 hours into the thing and you have to bail for a meeting or something you can usually grab it from them on your way out.

At least a couple of the events I've been to were *crowded* to the point of people standing / sitting in the aisles, though, so that's a good reason not to be too overloaded with stuff while you're there.

@SaoFeng:

have you received, seen or heard anything about the software giveaways yet?
do you have any info on their usuability? are they RTMs, Time-Limited Trials,
License-upgradable (CTP to RTM), Avaliable as Discs, Taxable, etc?

I've been to seminars the last 2 years, and each time i've received NFR software with no expiration. 2 years ago i got Office 2003 & Virtual PC (before they started giving it away), and last year i got Office 2007.

I was at the Los Angeles event today. Overall, it's a pretty good event.

Got the expected VS2008, Win Server 2008, and SQL Server 2008. Was surprised to see Vista Ultimate w/ SP1 also was in the messenger bag they gave out with all the goodies.

Sounds nice. I'm waiting impatiently for my local event.

Is/was there any mention of restrictions on the software, e.g. time limited, NFR, what have you?

(?!) they gave away the 4 programs below to *all* attendees?

1. Windows Server 2008
2. SQL Sever 2008
3. Visual Studio 2008
4. Windows Vista SP1

c'mom, lads. give us more details.... ;-) were the programs "Full" versions or "Time-limited" Trials? NFR? CTP or RTM? Upgradable? Taxable? Downloadable or Burnt on Discs? i guess that, at this point, there's be a blog somewhere on the web detailing the LA Event....

// getting excited.

From forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2784350&pagenumber=1

* Windows Server 2008
* SQL Server 2008
* Visual Studio 2008 Standard
* Windows Vista Ultimate w/SP1

Here's what my discs look like:

The Vista Ultimate is, far as I can tell, a full version. The only odd thing is inside it says "please visit registerwindowsvistasp1.com to register your Vista product key and enter in this pin #". So apparently you have to go to the website to get your product key.

The VS2008 also looks like a full version to me, Standard Edition.

The Server 2008 says "1 year promotional license". Just long enough to decide you'd rather use a real server OS instead

And the SQL Server disc is labeled "SQL Server 2008 Developer November 2007 - Community Technology Preview: Not for resale"

Also they were giving away Xbox360's all day.

Sounds like some decent give-aways, especially if Vista and the VS2008 are not expiring and are RTM software.

I'm not too sad about a time limited Server 2008 or CTP SQL server since I imagine anyone who really needs those is likely to be able to get the business to pay for fully supported versions easily enough.

A good question now is what will be the CONSISTENCY of these give-aways being as stated at the different events. In the past they've had less / different stuff at some of the smaller town events than they had in the big city major events.

People over on the SD forum say that there's a voucher to upgrade SQL Server CTP to SQL server RTM when it comes out. Makes sense they'd give that out since you kind of need it to use VS2008 to do database backed web service and LINQ etc. type development.

Someone else there also suggests it's unlikely to get Vista at the other smaller events.

Can anyone confirm if you actually received a voucher for SQL Server 2008 final?
...
Voucher for SQL Standard is in front of the binder with the other expected CD/DVD's.
...
I used the code in the Voucher to register to receive a copy of SQL Server 2008 when it's out.

Don't expect to get Vista Ulimate at all the other events - last year Los Angeles (or was it Anahiem) gave it out, but the Ontario one I went to didn't.
