Hmm, I was just clearing out my bookmarks and noticed that the down firing 12" sub that I bought 4-6 months ago is no longer made. They have a new foreward firing sub.

I really want to get one of these 12" Daytons, how would they compare to the Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultra Subwoofers?

The promedia 5.1 sub is ok, even compared to the Logitech 5500 sub. The Dayton 10 easily outpaces the Promedia sub. It is less muddy, more accurate, and definately more detailed.

This is coming from someone with 2 SVS CS Ultra tube subs.

Thanks. So, which would be the better sub, the 5500 or the 5.1 ultras?

Wow....the 10" is no longer there. I bought one on BF weekend.

It was one helluva purchase and I am so glad I got it then. I love the way movies and DTS audio sound so much better now. I keep thinking back to BF and now I am so happy that Velodyne at CC was a web only rebate. LOL!

GL with the 12". After hearing the 10" in my room, I know the 12" would have been major overkill. I barely have the 10" turned up and it rattles the room.

The 5500 would probably get louder, but it wouldn't be as tight at the promedia sub, and it would have a boomier sound.

Correct, but at the same volume the 5500 sub (as long as it is not corner loaded) is as accurate as the promedia Klipsch sub. It does go a little deeper and is flatter lower.

HOWEVER
Most with the 5500 sub play it over blown and way out of its capable range. If you play it in its capable range out of a corner, its not bad. Not up to the SVS/HSU/Adire/Titanic kit range, but pretty decent.

Put in my order for the 12" just now - was looking at the 10" for a few months and never did finish the order.

We got ours a couple days ago...it sounds awesome. It blends perfectly in with the music, i.e. doesn't sound like a separate speaker.

A question though...are these dayton sub-120's made from an amalgamation of parts from other companies?

Cause the back looks like this: 2d_1_b.JPG (from a picture I found on the i-net, not mine)

If you look closely, you can see that the back panel came from an Acoustech labs s100eth. So looks like they're using the amplifier section from Acoustech, and maybe replaced the 10" driver with a larger 12"?? (sorry i don't know subwoofers at all really).

I'd assume they use their own parts. Partsexpress has a wide variety of dayton components to give you an idea of what they have.

Just looking through briefly, I saw this plate amp they sell that looks very similar to the picture you linked to
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-802

I'm not sure on brands using other components or what's going on as far as labeling things differently.

I just got mine today and the back looks like the photo except that the label says "Dayton Audio" instead of "Acoustech Labs." There was some minor cosmetic damage, but I'm going to let it go.

Is it supposed to rest directly on the floor? There were four screw-on feet included, but there are no holes to screw the feet into.

Hah, so Dayton is just using relabeled Acoustech Labs parts.

Yoyo - is Dayton a quality brand??

Some info from AVS Forum:

"Feel around on the bottom of the sub, there are indentations where the holes are predrilled, you just have to poke through the veneer."

"By the way, be careful when your poking the spike feet through the veneer. On one of mine, the threaded insert popped out and was loose inside the enclosure. I had to take the driver out to get the insert and push it back into place."

Dayton makes some good stuff, yeah.

You can take a look at what else they carry at partsexpress.
ribbon13 has their 15" kit sub and 14 BR-1 monitors if you want to ask him what he thinks of the upper range stuff.
