since everyone is talking about subwoofers, the SVS PB10-ISD is one of the best bargain sub for its price range ($429), which would destroy the dayton, 10" and 12". just thought i would give some advice on anyone looking for a more expensive sub.

True, but at 4x the price, it should, shouldn't it? ;)

Plenty of projects available with those mids.

Examples?

Any thoughts from other people on building your own speakers? Where's the break even point? I.E., the price at which if you go lower, you're not getting anything for the money over what a manufacturer could do. How would some of these cheaper kits compare to the Polk R15s (@50bucks for the pair)?

Yup, but their is nothing and I mean NOTHING <$600 that can touch the PB10ISD from SVS. Nothing comes close to going to 18-20hz in room in that price range.

I think the general consensus over avsforum is that the Dayton is of significantly higher quality :)

Gah! Now, are the folks at avforum "audiophile" type that can tell you what brand of interconnects you are using just by listening to a white noise generator hooked up using them, or are they the average tone-deaf Joe-consumer like myself? I thought my first Advent sounded fine - better than two other powered subs I have/had (JVC 8" and Fisher 10"). Well, Amazon has shipped the second sub already...

You don't need to tell me, I got one when they were $399, but even SVS has a couple options below $600 that are going to be better than the PB10.
For $600 you could get a PB12, a 25-31 pci or a 20-39 pci.
Not to mention what you can get used http://av123forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10879

Yeah, all those examples were from SVS, but just from that you can see that calling it the best for under $600 doesn't make sense.

The 12" is awesome. After using my first one in his setup, my dad handed me cash and told me to order my own. ;)

$120 shipped is worth waiting for!

The Dayton BR1 monitor kit at part's express has many fans. Come to think of it, i've rarely heard any criticism. Otherwise i'm waiting for av123's Onix XLS bookshelf to begin shipping mid/late november http://av123forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10803 $199 for a pair.

Here's the link to Amazon's $79 12" Advent subwoofer in case somebody would rather have that.

My Bad, I meant $500 and new.

BTW, I have a pre owned 16-46PC+ that is $875 new that I paid $600 shipped for and LOVE IT.

HSU VTF-2 is a great sub. It is also downward firing which is a plus if you have small children in the house (prevents things from getting poked into the driver.

If you gonna pay that much for a sub... Audioc.com use to have DIY Subs. Dunno if they still do. Also, I am hearing great things with outlaw audio subs. I have one big 15" massive driver I bought off of UBID for 350 shipped 3 year ago. 15" JBL Drive with a 1000 watt Bob Carver (sunfire) amp. When playing private ryan, every vet on the block was ducking for cover. This thing will blow out matches 15' away! ;) The only bad is a sub this size is gonna suck up some realestate in the living room.

The HSU STF-2 and VTF-2 were the couple subs that I was looking at vs the PB10 when I was researching. It seemed to me that the PB10 was slightly ahead for HT usage, but yeah those are great subs too from what I've read.

You could be right. I evaluated for music, where the HSU came out slightly ahead. The VTF-2 blends in seemlessly with my Nola Minis

Found my 16-46PC+ on Audiogon 9as did my Left/Right Ascend 340's with matching stnads ($500 shipped).

Both sub and mains were awesome deals, absolute MINT condition.

The SVS subs def beat out the Outlaw and HSu subs in the same price range IMHO.

DIY, only if you REALLY know what you are doing.

SVS is pretty tought to beat in any of their pirce catagories.

Genlec and Contrabas beat SVS out, but are MUCH more $$$$$.

Now, if you meet the proper requirements, a Good IB system will blow away just about anytning and cost significantly less.

awesome. hopefully my backorder will ship soon.
strategy for those who really want x2 12"s, but are married:
order 1 using the secret CC. On the same day, talk the woman into ordering an additional one for you for your birthday, or early Christmas. With any luck, they will ship/arrive the same day, and you can play it off like they accidentally sent 2 instead of one. The small amount of deal-hunting you have instilled in her will prevail over her conscience, and will make her forget about the potential eye-sore that it may end up being.
I wish I would have thought of this a couple of days ago, before my birthday.
