DDR

The Game.

I'm interested in which version of the game would be best to purchase (their seems to be many of them), and which mat to get (would the mat that comes with the game suffice)...? And which versions come with a mat..where can I find them...erggh?!

You gotta get good to get a real good workout. Buy DDRMAX and DDRMAX2 for PS2 and a soft pad. Go with the red octane ignition 2.0's found here: http://www.redoctane.com/ddr.html

Dont mind the price of the pads. Your knees will thank you.... dont go cheap on the pads either, cuz you'll get SERVED in your score (read: responsiveness really sucks on those cheap flat ones).

1. DDR Max 2 is the latest and best version for PS2
2. I recommend getting the foam-filled Ignition mats off of eBay. DON'T get the Red Ocatane Ignition 2.0's... they are overpriced.
3. Only DDR Max 2 comes with the mat at retail stores. I hear it's an OK mat...

It's an addictive game and a good workout, but there are a lot of douches that play it. a lot...

You should get something like this

I played in an arcade yesterday, and got pretty sweaty by the time I was done with a good few rounds.
It was my first time and great fun, and I expect if you do it for a while a day (30 mins) it would be pretty good for a workout, as long as you aren't lazy on it.
And make sure you buy lots of different games for it with different music, or you'll learn the routines and get bored of the music.

You played it for the first time and you're saying learning the paterns makes you get bored? HAH. A DDRNOOB IS YOU!

Learning the paterns in fast BPM songs is essential... try doing MAX 300 before learning it and you'll get booed.

I'm saying if you do 30 mins or more every day of the week for months you'll probably start to get bored of the tunes and learn the patterns 😛
Then you'll need to make sure you have alternatives.

I wouldn't doubt that it's decent cardio, but if you do this as a workout you're a frigging idiot, and a huge nerd.

Why? You'll stick with your exercise program better if it doesn't feel like so much of a chore. Given two equal forms of exercise, one that is fun, and one that is not, why would you do the one that isn't fun?

For me, I hate going to the gym, but dancing, kayaking, swimming, frisbee, and operating giant puppets is fun and good exercise, so that's what I do.

I totally agree, I HATE the gym, I cant stand doing repetitive motions all the time. So I play raquetball, hockey and DDR! 😀

Hey, you're a poet and you're not even aware of it! 😀

My current puppeteering gig is paying me money on top of being an excellent workout. You can call me whatever you want. How many of you get paid to run on a treadmill? 🙂

Yes it is a good work out. Go on it straight for 20-30minutes and you will be knackered.

Koing

Yeah, once you get good and start going the maniac levels, you'll get a really good work out.

Dancing - gets girls naturally. substitute men if you're a chick or gay.
Kayaking - read above
swimming - read above
frisbee - read above
operating giant puppets...ummmm....sure what the hell, read above

but DDR? the first 4 "exercise" things you've listed can be social, and they're generally not frowned upon. DDR is generally looked at as a nerd thing, and while it is somewhat fun, I have lots of disdain for it. DDR isn't really social; sure, you might meet partners, and you might even find girls that love to play, but it has a pretty big stigma among people. Maybe it's just the people I know who play it, but they're not exactly the coolest people out there. Doing it for fun is one thing, but doing it as exercise? I find it questionable. Just playing DDR isn't going to turn you from a fat sweaty geek into a ripped cool kid.

As far as the guy that doesn't like repetitive motions, that's all that DDR is, moving your feet, unless you like doing flips and other wacky wacky things of that nature.

If I said I love to play kickball (which i do), would you consider that to be real exercise? I sure as hell don't. It's something to do that involves running around, kicking a ball, throwing a ball, and catching a ball. Is line dancing an exercise? I move my feet a certain way for a bunch of time, that might count! How about pushing a broken down car? I could do that all day, i'd push really fast and it'd be mad fun! Hey wait, maybe smoking is a good cardio exercise, because I test how much smoke I can get into my lungs, and my ability to breathe while inhaling carcinogens!

tl;dr: there are things that are entertainment, things that are exercise, and both. i think this falls under #1

Maybe you just haven't put effort into DDR and its ilk.
If you really go for it and keep moving, it can be as good exercise as anything else.

Is aerobics good exercise? All that is is moving your feet about to music, yet people do it as exercise.
If you turn DDR into a sort of aerobics it will be good for you.
Don't just stand there, but move about, and move your arms and stuff as well.

DDR is kind of like jogging. You're moving your feet a whole bunch. I personally find playing ddr to be more entertaining than running in a circle.

Sorry dude but i'm not taking advice about "how not to be a nerd" from someone who has 10k+ posts on a BBS.

Probably not the type of dancing you're thinking of. 🙂

Tell people you make a fitness hobby out of operating Audrey II in "Little Shop Of Horrors" and you will probably get a stranger look than if you told them you lost 50 lbs. playing DDR.

Since when was exercising ever a social activity? I can't be social when I'm kayaking - I'm in a boat in the ocean. In fact, the last time I tried to be "social" on the water, I got blindsided by a 6-foot wave and ended up with a cut on my eye and a mild concussion - despite wearing a helmet.

Who cares if YOU frown upon it? A lot of people frown on Richard Simmons videos, but the bottom line is that you aren't exercising to be "cool," you are exercising to lose weight or get in shape.

How many people are sitting at home "Sweating To The Oldies," peddling their stationary bike in their basement, or doing Tae Bo videos? How many people have weight benches in their basement and do most of their lifting alone?

Social interaction or "coolness" is definitely not the defining characteristic of "exercise."

As far as the guy that doesn't like repetitive motions, that's all that DDR is, moving your feet, unless you like doing flips and other wacky wacky things of that nature.
When you get right down to it, most every exercise is reptitive motion. What's not repetitive about swimming, kayaking, dancing? Jogging? Lifting? Can you think of an exercise that really isn't repetitive in any way? At the end of the day, ultimate frisbee is nothing more than running up and down a field, occaisionally stopping to catch and throw the disc.

What is your criteria for something to be labelled "exercise?"

For some reason you seem define exercise as something other than a task that you do that improves your phsyical fitness. If kickball or line dancing or DDR gets your pulse rate up and your body moving, I have grave news for you: It is, in fact, exercising.

By this token, many non-conventional things can be considered exercise, from aerobics to intercourse.

At the lowest level, the key to losing weight is burning more calories than you take in, and the key to burning calories is getting your heart rate up for more than 10 or so minutes.

If playing DDR is "fun" enough for some people, and it gets their blood pumping, should they not do it just because some people don't consider it a "sport?"

Saying "yes" is just plain stupid.

I'd rather people use video games as a workout method than letting themselves pork up because they aren't interested in "conventional" exercise methods and somebody told them that alternative exercise methods aren't "cool" enough.
