DDR memory and MB question

is it true that you need to use Registered DDR sticks to use more than 2 at a time? I know this is true somewhat on athlon boards but what about P4's?
 
it depends on the board

if you read the roundup on anandtechs main page the abit kr7a is stable with all 4 dimms populated with ddr ram (unbuffered/non parity)

** they acutally tested how many sticks each board could hold and stay stable (most boards only have 3 dimms slots, and most of them could use all 3 at once, all of them are using unbuffered/non parity ram)
 
i guess i could answer your question a little better 🙂 basically it depends on the chipset, and how good of a job the motherboard manufac did with the timing of the dimms
