DDO

now that its been out for awhile, whats the general consensus on DDO?

are they ever going to offer free trials?

It's hmm...not quite trash but there are a lot of issues with it at the moment.

Top of the list is the lack of content. There are a couple hundred quests and that's it. There is nothing else to do in the game besides questing or buying/selling loot.

Apparently Turbine expects players to "master" quest content. They present quests in 3 difficulties : normal, hard, and elite. Unfortunately they also introduced a system where the chests in the quest stop giving loot after about 10 lootings. Sooo...since there are only so many top level quests after you've run them all a few times you are literally left with NOTHING to do unless you want to roll an alt. If you choose to run these quests where you've "ransacked" the chests you actually end up losing money as you have to spend quite a bit to repair your equipment.
The chests are supposed to reset after 1 week but of course they do not.

There are other bugs...but bottom line is, if you're looking for a deep game that you can enjoy for a long time look somewhere else.

lol, guess i won't eb buying it then.
i really miss playing an mmorpg but there's nothing good out there and i really don't want to go back to wow. its been about 8 months but it doesn't seem like much has changed for the casual player.

Vanguard FTW... though it won't be out until at least November... maybe longer.

For the casual player DDO might not be a bad option though.. if you don't play all the time and try to burn through the content as fast as possible, you might enjoy it. It's not your typical MMO though... it's single group stuff, all instanced much the same way that guild wars is. Everything revolves around missions, and you generally get your xp from completing the missions, regardless of what or how much stuff you kill. I'm not playing it.. it isn't what i'm looking for , as I really want an MMO "world" like Vanguard will hopefully offer, rather than the string of instances that DDO has... but DDO definately has a niche that some people like.

If I had a set group of friends that I played with all the time, and could get together with on a regular basis I'd probably give it a try.... but for now I'm just sticking with single player games until Vanguard is out.

Vanguard sounds like another raid/grindfest. i'm looking at Age of Conan but I recently heard some things i wasn't quite happy about, so i don't know what i'll be playing next.

VG shouldn't be a raidfest, if they live up to what they advertise. They are claiming it is group centered and not raid centered... 20% solo content, 60% group content, 20% raid content. Hard to say what future expansions will bring of course, but that's what they are telling us about the game right now... so far in beta there isn't even any raid content in the game from what I've heard.

Grindfest... maybe.. it will certainly be slower leveling than the joke that is WoW... but whether it will be fun or dull grinding I won't be able to say until it comes out or I get into beta.

This game should never have been subscription. There's other models that they could have used... perhaps expansions (of like 200 quests), or selling small adventure packs (or like 25-100 quests), or even individual quests (maybe $0.25 each).

I tend to agree. Since the game was being billed as a computerized version of the pen and paper game, they could have marketed it jsut like the P&P game and made all of their money off of selling new modules to plug into the main game, giving them new dungeons loot and quests. I may try out the 7 day free trial though and see how the game looks in retail.. I only saw it in beta.

exactly the same

It was fun for a month, but i quickly ran out of thingsto do after the 3rd week, rerolling and doing the same dungeons i had already done 3-4x was not an option. This game should have been priced similar to Guild Wars, i see absolutely no reason to pay a monthly fee for it (especially $15usd)
