Vanguard FTW... though it won't be out until at least November... maybe longer.
For the casual player DDO might not be a bad option though.. if you don't play all the time and try to burn through the content as fast as possible, you might enjoy it. It's not your typical MMO though... it's single group stuff, all instanced much the same way that guild wars is. Everything revolves around missions, and you generally get your xp from completing the missions, regardless of what or how much stuff you kill. I'm not playing it.. it isn't what i'm looking for , as I really want an MMO "world" like Vanguard will hopefully offer, rather than the string of instances that DDO has... but DDO definately has a niche that some people like.
If I had a set group of friends that I played with all the time, and could get together with on a regular basis I'd probably give it a try.... but for now I'm just sticking with single player games until Vanguard is out.

This game should never have been subscription. There's other models that they could have used... perhaps expansions (of like 200 quests), or selling small adventure packs (or like 25-100 quests), or even individual quests (maybe $0.25 each).

I tend to agree. Since the game was being billed as a computerized version of the pen and paper game, they could have marketed it jsut like the P&P game and made all of their money off of selling new modules to plug into the main game, giving them new dungeons loot and quests. I may try out the 7 day free trial though and see how the game looks in retail.. I only saw it in beta.
