I finally tried DayZ the other day and it runs like poop, even with all the graphics settings reduced to minimums.

What is your PC specs?

Custom Build - Phenom II x4 @ 3.1 GHz | Diamond ATi Radeon 5850 1 GB | 2 x 2 GB DDR3-1600 | MSI 770-C45 Mobo | Asus Xonar DS Sound card | Win7 64 | 1 TB HDD | LG 32" HDTV
this?

4gb RAM *shudder*. Buy more ram man, it's dirt cheap right now. 8gb cost me 30-40$. I doubt that is the issue though, but it would help performance. Your video card isn't the best nor is your processor but you should be able to run this game easily. Arma 2 only uses 2 cores, so try using any boosting feature you have in your BIOS if you are willing to try and make this work. GHZ is whatr we are shooting for with A2. Again, try setting everything to low again and set res to 800x600. Does it work semi-smooth then? If not something is wrong software-wise. I had the same issue but I wasn't sure it was arma 2 or drivers or just simply my specialty GFX card.

On a clean reformat I just did, I had to install MSI afterburner and simply increase the 3d Clockspeed of my GPU up. This caused my FPS on my 580gtx (ZOTAC) to spike from 10fps on lowest settings to what I'd expect (80+ FPS). Not sure if it's arma 2 or my ZOTAC 580 GTX OC.

Vanilla Arma 2 runs fine, so I guess it's just a mod issue? Does it use THAT MUCH more RAM?

Make sure you turn off post processing and your 3d graphics resolution is set to the same as your native monitor settings. Not doing that can really bork up performance.

DayZ officially going standalone: Link

The end of the beginning
That’s right, this is actually happening - DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive. This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago.

Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.

I realize people will have many, many questions - but we wanted to let everyone know the announcement now. Over the coming weeks, these questions will be answered. The game will have it’s own site, www.dayzgame.com and the mod will continue at it’s present link.

Wow! I'm glad they are getting hired on! It's always a bit warm and fuzzy hearing modders get recruited to bring their creations into the commercial business because you know it'll mean better polish, compatibility, and hopefully a smoother experience for users, so no crazy setup scheme.

Now if only DayZ would actually run well on my system >:|

IIRC, the creator of DayZ was already on the BI payroll. He developed the mod in his spare time.

There is also some competition to DayZ coming soon... http://thewarz.com/

Question is, will WarZ and the official DayZ game both retain the Wild West appeal and unpredictability that currently keeps DayZ so interesting and fresh for players?

A lot of people have made a good case that WarZ doesn't actually exist in any form other than a few mockups using a existing F2P engine.

This game is getting pretty awesome, but it sucks when you first start out and are sneaking into towns trying to get your first weapon. Then when you finally get one you seriously have to think about what happens when you fire it, and what else will hear the shots.

Still probably more stable than ARMA 2...

LOL, yeah.

That's one of my favorite parts. I actually wish they would play that up more.

This part never gets old for me. Even with all the stuff horded up at camp if I die I don't mind it too much because the new life thrill is always fresh. My longest life was 8 days and I accidentally ejected out of the Heli. I didn't mind spawning again as long as it is near Cherno or Elektro.

I've found the best method for me anyways is go to the industrial area first and find a hatchet at least. Then I hit the church because they often have real guns either pistol or rifle/shotgun. Then I hit the store. Then the firehouse. Once I'm geared up I GTFO and head north.

I don't sneak I aggro zeds in to a building then hatchet them if I can. Getting in a building with no other exit = death if you have aggro'd a bunch. Friend of mine and I went to the Office/School in Elektro. and we had about 15 zeds on us. We had to use guns didn't have hatchets for some reason. Ended up killing 20+ in the building. Was ridiculous.

Do you know the name of the servers? I'm from Chicago as well and at night I usually go to some UK server to avoid the night, but if its a local server, my ping would go down. Also, team up?

yeah, i'd be down

US 1861 - 74.119.217.121 port 2303 - REGULAR - CHICAGO TIME ZONE
US 1259 - 74.119.217.122 port 2302 - VETERAN - CHICAGO TIME ZONE
US 1455 - 74.119.217.123 port 2302 - VETERAN - HONG KONG TIME ZONEUS 1862 - 74.119.217.124 port 2303 - REGULAR - HONG KONG TIME ZONE

They only restart if they crash, no 6 hour reset cycle or anything.

If you are having trouble finding stuff, watch where you spawn, you can usually see where you are here :

We're all for other survivors joining us. All we ask is to contribute to the groups survival and we will take care of you. We run our own server.

This offer seems like what the soldiers were doing in 28 Days Later. When we get there you'll steal our shit and rape the women players.

Not really. You'd have nothing we need unless you have an M4 CCO SD with a GL on it. We just want people who will help and not just run off with our hard earned ordinance.

Man, that hackers in this game are driving me crazy, I was exploring a huge town on the lower left hand side of the map and then I get pulled into thunderdome. I promptly aborted out of the game, hopefully I wasn't shot up too quickly.

Edit: After a while I noticed that Dayz Commander was left open on the server that I was in. I joined the game and the ground was littered with a ton of dead players stuff. I ended up picking up someones high powered sniper rifle, but the hacker was still watching the area, so I jumped out of the game again. Now upon joining another server I am stuck in the middle of a field somewhere off of the map with a broken leg. FML.

I'd definitely love to get in on a game where there is something like that going on. I don't have jack anyway so it doesn't matter if you guys end up killing me :)
