Day one patch for PS4

So the PS4 is getting a day one patch here is some info:

List:
Remote Play with Vita
Second screen experiences on other devices
Recording and streaming functionality
Play games as they download
Multiple user log-in
Voice chat
Face recognition with voice commands
Background music player
Online multiplayer
Play Blu-ray and DVD movies

This is no surprise, they needed to start manufacturing the consoles has soon has possible so I'm guessing they started production with the very basic Firmware, thus leaving everything that was't 100% for a launch patch, its a common practice in the gaming industry also, allot of games do the same, there's allot of day 1 patches for games, date lines are very complicated so they need to cram has much has possible until the production starts and then if needed finish until launch.

Personally this doesn't bother me, but I see this being an issue for a minority with problematic internet.

Marketed features are not something that should just be "patched" in later after release.
They should rename the system to Playpatch

wtf so if you don't put your ps4 online you can't use it as a bluray player? that is very odd, the ps2 played dvds right out of the box, and the ps3 played blurays and dvds right out of the box.

Well they had to cut corner to able to maintain the release date, I mean they had to start manufacturing the console has soon has possibly to have enough stock to compensate the demand, getting your hands on PS4 and X1 in the 1st weeks is gonna be very hard if you haven't pre-order.

I don't think it's odd at all. Blu-Ray playback support was a huge aspect of the PS3 as the console served as Sony's means to push their format -- even though it was arguably inferior to HD-DVD at the outset. Why the history lesson? Because it's important to keep in mind that while Blu-Ray playback was important back then, it's probably not the main focus this time. They want to make sure that if the first thing someone does is plop a game in their console that it will work.

I mentioned it in the PlayStation 4 thread, but my guess is that Sony probably forked their OS to ensure that they could build a stable but feature-reduced build that they could ship with systems. I mean... they've been building consoles for something like two months already.

Sony putting out a patch for a console? Sounds like they haven't missed a step from the PS3. :p

Both consoles have a day one patch. Microsoft actually announced theirs quite awhile ago, but they never stated all that it would include.

MS also did this with Windows 8.1. The RTM / released to manufacturing version given to OEMs to meet the October release date was incomplete and not quite done baking.

Cause the XB1 isn't getting a huge day one patch...oh wait...DRM removal etc

The 360 mainly had the twice-a-year updates and the small ones in-between were very, very quick. Every single one of these PS3 patches were slow to down and slow to install. Every time you'd turn on your PS3, there was an update. It was ridiculous.

I don't see a problem with so many patches, that's a good thing means the PS3 was constantly working in improving it, of course there are a few of them that are very controversial like the one that removed OS has a feature among other things.
The only problematic thing I found was installation, these are small patches but they did take easily 5-10 mins to install, another big problem I hope they fix for the PS4 is connectivity, I have a 120MB(124 to be exact) internet connection, but even connected by ethernet cable I don't get more then 32mb on my PS3, that makes downloading games from PS+ very annoying, not only that if I turn the wireless on that speed goes to half by barely achieving 16 mb and the router is just besides it.

I hope they have a proper Ethernet/Wifi in the PS4.

I didn't realize there were 16 patches on June 24th 2009. Must have been a busy day.

Not really a surprise. The software wasn't ready when they had to start manufacturing the hardware. They got a base level of the software down so it could play games but everything else had to be worked on afterwards. They started manufacturing of these things like 2 months ago to meet the demand and numbers they want. You're also going to have a day 1 patch for the X1 as well just to even use the thing due to all the 180's they did.

Does it suck we have day one patches/updates? Yes. But it really was to be expected, happens all the time with games, was just a matter of time it was going to happen for the console it self with the amount of non game related functions they do now.

That's exactly the point, each update would take quite a while to download and update. That was even with numerous "security" patches that had to patch all the damn holes in the OS and elsewhere. Software is not Sony's strong-suit, hardware is. Microsoft is the opposite, or at least has been but I feel like they're turning a corner on that.

If the ps4 doesn't fix the network issue's I'll be pretty mad. Lord knows I don't want a Xbox one but if the experience is going to be better then so be it.

The patching is mostly an issue because Sony forces you to download the entire OS at once when you update. There are no small incremental updates, which would be much nicer! The download woes are not as bad when you have PS+, because the PS3 will download the patches in the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately, there is no option to auto-patch.

Day one patch makes sense. Software can be changed in hours, hardware can't. Once you have the hardware nailed down you have to start producing it well before launch date, since it cannot be infinitely replicated like software can be, so you patch it day one. Hopefully they don't host the patch on pentium PCs with dial-up like Nintendo did (apparently that annoyed the 15-20 people who actually got a Wii near launch date).

I would think so. My HTPC is always updating it seems. PS+ makes it much more bearable.

Recently probably not but for the first few years yes as they added to the blu-ray spec (I think they are at 2.1 now?).

Hopefully patches are updated in the background without interruption like on Windows.

I know for games they can. Like you can play a game, start a download of another game, then continue the game you were playing and there is no slowdown. I hope there can be updates for the OS the same way, not interrupting what you're doing.
