Day 1 of Cut starting 03/12/2010

Have you interested your intensity? I checked out the pics and based on the progress you made in one year, I don't know if dropping 5% is realistic in 3 months. My results look better after 5 weeks of training now.

When I do cut, it's usually 3 months...I think this is the breaking point for many though that are doing true cuts. You are losing your mass and sacrificing everything....it's hard.

Too many think a cut is just hitting the gym actually and skipping the second bowl of Ben and Jerry's each night.

One of the guys I regularly see at the gym started cutting about a month ago for a competition in June; he's planning on going from 227 to 185. He's down around 202 right now, but has stalled for the past week. I have a feeling the next two months are going to suck pretty hard for him. Then again, he's also only 18 or 19, so he has the metabolic elasticity to pull it off, I'm sure.

Personally, I could never stand the idea of putting on excess weight, so I've never gone through the gain/cut cycle. I just aim to walk around at my "comfort zone" weight and body fat % (170-175 lbs, ~8%) year-round. For me, maintenance is just easier to deal with than instituting significant change, especially since it's something I've been doing for a decade now.

Best of luck to you, though. What're your target goals?

I doubt you are seeing much gains staying at 8% bodyfat...

I haven't had a significant gain in strength in about two or three years now, other than form-related changes on exercises I only recently started including. But I'm fine with that, as I accept that there really isn't much room for progression from where I'm at, given my frame and body composition, without gaining weight.

I just don't have any desire to increase my weight, so I'm perfectly fine with where my lifts currently are. That being said, I wouldn't mind bumping up my squats a bit; they've always been my weakest exercise.

that's cool, but at the same time different ball game then those that are into it competitively.

I do the same thing though...once I get to about 190 cut...I don't really see a need to push out further.

I'm cutting right now as well...Started about a month ago, will be about 6-8 weeks. Pretty much until I feel like stopping, likely when I hit 155ish (started at 175, 163.6 currently).

Good luck.

Actually. Cuts are normally 3 months/12 week intervals, same with bulking from what I've seen. Dropping 5% is definitely possible within 3 months. The biggest factor would be my diet.

I'm going to cut out my salt intake and probably alternate between 1500-1800 calories a day. I'll probably spike up my caloric intake once a week to "zig zag" to shock my body. I'm thinking 2300 calories for these days.

As for my macros, I'm going to stay at a 30%fat/30%protein/40%carbs macro, maybe a 20/40/40. Let's see. Wish me luck. I'll update my journal etc. in my bodyspace page. For all those doing so as well, good luck! Let's do this shit together!

For your size, 1500 is probably too low. You want to stay at or a little above your BMR, which according to your stats is about 1850.

I'm a little smaller than you, and I'm losing weight at a pretty good pace while averaging 2000 calories.

I'm also cutting right now, but from a mostly untrained state. Started 6'2'' 210 lb, down to 188.6 lb after 57 days. I'm don't really have a concrete goal in mind. Maybe 170, maybe 175, I guess it mostly depends on appearance. I'm planning on putting some muscle weight back on after.

OP looks a long ways away from 10% bodyfat.
Okay looked at more pics. You're in pretty good shape but still looks like 10% will be tough.

Yeah, I have no goals of competing anytime in the near future. I think I could probably do decently (i.e., not finish dead last) in my current state, but I don't pretend to be in the same kind of shape as someone who would cut from 190 down to my weight for a show.

I am too trying to cut though at this point, I'll have to clean up my diet or run a hell of a lot more. My goal is a 6 pack and I'm finally squeezing out my 4th one if I tighten my abs.

I had mastover from johnstonefitness.com give me a breakdown of some macros he wants me to try and caloric range to hit. Let's see how progress goes.

Heh it's game time! Last year at the same time I weighed 210 and was at 21% bodyfat. Took me 3 months to hit 14%-15% and I've sustained it since then. I lost motivation when my last relationship took a dump but thankfully I've been able to maintain and stay at this weight. Get hype!

Good luck with your cut. I'm somewhat cutting, doing a 6-week paleo challenge with my Crossfit gym. Started at 218, 18% bodyfat, down to 208-210 as of today, shooting for 190 @10-12% by summer.

The paleo diet seems to be a CrossFit buzz word. It's a pretty hard diet to keep up with if you are being honest about it. Very restrictive...most of the 6-7-8 week results I wasn't really impressed with. They had some more definition, but looked washed out.

A bodybuilder on a carb-restricted diet gets the same kind of look.

You have to do a couple weeks tweaking at the end to get back to a healthy look.

IMHO people think too much on the diet. I figure what my lean mass will be that I want. Add up 1g of protein for every pound of that. Take 10% of it for unsaturated fats and allow the rest in carbs that are low in sugars.

On the cut I am realistic that any 'treats' are just going to fuck my progress up...it's a mission; quick in, quick out; no bullshit.

I usually do a couple cuts working my way back into shape...once I am in shape all I keep an eye on is my abs. As soon as I lose definition I do a week or two of damage control.

I keep my diet all business Monday through Friday (barring holidays and my vacations) and on the weekends let loose a bit. I am fortunate that food is not really a turn-on for me and I don't really care for sweets. I will pound down 21 beers on an average weekend, when I am partying maybe double that. I stay in shape...If I skipped the beers I start getting to that freaky look with veins in my neck, chest, shoulders and legs...my arms are usually pretty vascular and most don't find that so aversive.

At the end of a week's vacation I will admit I have damage control to do...it's worth it though. I am in for the long haul and know I will be chubby at those rare times.
