Dawn of War

Anyone else tried it yet? IT RULES! Watching your Space Marine mechs throw down for the first time is quite an eye-opener. Awesome attention to detail as well. I was a huge Total Annihilation fan, but never really cared for StarCraft or CC.

This is the best RTS I've played in a long time, definetly worth a buy. The guys at Relic know what they're doing (in case you haven't tried Homeworld).

Congrats and I havent went out to get it yet.

Not meaning to be annoying but there was an official DoW thread I believe.

I played the demo and I am very impressed. This is by the same guys who wrote Homeworld and the sequel so I'm not surprised.

It's all action w/almost no time to plot, which is the only thing I dislike about this game.

The dreadnought is awesome when he sticks his buzzsaw into an enemy leader and shakes him up over his head.

The first time I sent one in he swatted at a group of Eldar and sent them soaring through the air, I couldn't stop laughing.

Sorry, I looked back quite a few pages and didn't see any DoW mention, guess I shoulda done a search.

I need a new machine for this, so it'll have to wait. 😛

But I'm thinking about a new computer just for this...

My 1.7 P4 with 512 Ram and GF44600 runs it fine...detail is turned down, but it still looks AWESOME. Of course, I did just buy an upgrade...just waiting for the Mobo/Processor/1 gig of ram to arrive.

Sw33t thx guys now I have a new game to request for my birthday on the 15th. Was thinking about Nam67, COD UO, or Rome Total War but this sounds good.

Amazing game so far, how many RTS games can you actually see a unit grab another and smush em or throw them across the screen. The attention to detail is amazing, I love love love this game. I like most RTS, but this is one of the best bar none!

I loved the demo. I actually began to collect the Warhammer table-top game pieces way before i even knew about the game. This is the first Warhammer game that competes and beats other games in its class. I love the squad upgrading and Army Painter feature.

I just finished the single player campaign, I'll probably start to dabble in multiplayer soon. I need to skirmish with some armies besides the marines to see what I like best. The terminators and land raiders are some awesome units, termies will straight tear through any other infantry in a matter of seconds. Its funny to hear them laugh in that super deep voice when give them orders.

This game is awesome, though I actually play the Tabletop game every week and nothing can replace that.

I haven't played it in about 4 days though... since I got Rome: Totwal War. I'll get back into it in about a month though, when R:TW no longer grabs my total attention.

Pretty nice game so far, it's no WarCraft III, but it's better than most anything else that's somewhat new.
I doubt the single player part will keep me busy much longer though, so far the story hasn't been all that, which is unfortunate.

I spend £30 on this game. Box looks good, manual looks good.... I look at the CD's.... 3 CD's shoved onto the 1 spot!?!?! Last time that happened to me was with EA C&C Renegade, 2 CD's on the 1 spindle since I dont know what else to call it and one of my cd's cracked.

Needless to say that its not pleased me at all. Ive popped them all in nice little paper wallets so I dont have to risk cracking a CD.

Just about to play the game. From what Ive read, its going to be fun.

i think DOW is what WC3 was supposed to be.

i like it sooo much better

wow, this game seems to combine warcraft and starcraft. and does a great job! i think possibly in the future i might buy this game in addition to HL2.

The thing that i know I LOVE about this game is it FORCES offense. Turtle people can no longer win, because base defenses, to put it bluntly, suck a$$. Sure they can hold off a squad or 2, but not any sort of decent attack. I hope they balance out some things soon with a patch. But other than some simple imbalance issues, I love every aspect of the game.

DoW is the best RTS i've played since WC2... a MUST have...

i'm on the final mission of the single player game, and then i'm going back to online play (i was in both betas and have been playing this game for months now... ) it's a much more solid game now in it's retail stage...

Whether my tired eyes deceive me or not but quite frankly, I notice only minor slowdown at 1280x1024x32 @ max settings.

XP2500+ @ 200x11.5
1Gb Pc3200
128mb 256bit Radeon 9800Pro

Anyone got an opinions on this? Are my eyes so overwhelmed by the sheer quality of the graphics or is the engine just finely tuned to perfection?

If it looks that good and runs that well..... Relic deserve some credit. Homeworld series looked good but theres a limit to what you can do with spaceships (turrets were handled phenomenally). DoW.... Dreadnaughts and their stab n' throw tactics, Heavy Bolters (my fav weapon) laying down impressive suppression fire, Librarians smiting foes with feverant justice..... the attention to detail is amazing and as you may notice, Ive only tampered with the marines so far.

Looking back to Space Crusade from 1992 by Gremlin (remember that great company?), the Space Marines there looked rather plain but they seemed to be bulkier than the DoW ones. The DoW Space Marines, although they make humans look like dwarves, they dont seem to have the bulk behind them like I assumed they'd have. For the 'Elite' warriors wearing massive Power Armour, they look a bit on the thin side.

I played the demo and the only thing I didn't like was that it lacked unit diversity. In most other RTS games you could make up combinations of units that were useful for each situation and I didn't see that in this game, at least not in the demo. Is the full version any better?

Dawn of War doesn't have much unit diversity, which is my biggest complaint about it.

The four races are slightly different but pretty much come down to the same principals. You talor your units by equipping them with different weaponry (i.e. flamer, heavy bolter, missle launcher, or plasma gun) and having differnet vehicles accompany them (meaning a vehicle that is better against armor or one that is better against infantry).

Still the game is pretty fun. It just probably won't stay that way for very long.

I've found a tank, a close assault squad, and a heavy bolter squad will see you through most situations (maybe add a missle squad if you think your gonna face lots of vehicles).

well i can only speak about Eldar and Space Marines and to me, they have great diversity. Each unit you build has it's own uses, you guys just might not know what each heavy weapon does. i'm going to be overly simple here so bear with me, basically you can only make Marines. but how you equip your units is how they perform against what kind of enemy...

if you have a squad of marines and equip them with heavy bolters they'll tear through lightly armored foes like orks and eldar. rocket launchers take out vehicles and builders. flamers lower the moral of enemy forces and make it easy to make your enemy to retreat and plasma guns take out the heavy infanty (space marines and chaos) and special units (deamons, bosses...). assault marines are your close combat troops.

with the eldar, it's the same thing. howling banshies are hand to hand combat. warp spiders are your assault force, dark reapers take out heavy infantry and guardians are your run of the mill troop. how you combine your forces and use each unit in support of another will detrmine how well and effective your eldar army plays

I think the demo let you use up to level 2 units, so there are still level 3 units, relic units, and several research options to be tried. I'm not clear on which other rts's you are comparing to, but you can assign groups of units to hotkeys. Like trmnlprep said, alot of how marines are played is equiping them with the proper weapons for the situation/enemy. Their vehicles are far more effective at their respective roles when so equipped.

If you like to play skirmish games then you can practice with all 4 races against the computer. While it is true that most of the units have what is roughly their equivilent in other races, effectively using them with their respective race is another ballgame entirely.
