From my vantage point it almost looked like he started having a seizure the way his body was moving, but it might just have been confusion from the lack of oxygen to the brain....

Yeah, the whole block of ice trick was BS; he was surrounded by air within the ice, of which air is actually a good insulator. Doing such a trick in frigid water is actually more impressive.

Yup...that's an age old trick that eskimos do. except they called them igloos.

The thing is that certain monks actually do a trick in freezing water where they begin to raise their body temperature through meditation just enough so that they don't freeze to death.

I remember a special long ago where they took the monks into a freezing cave and put wet rags on their bare backs. After meditating a while, the whole cave became a steam room because they raised their body temps so high. As for Blaine, he is not better than Houdini by any means. Houdini was insane, he could dislocate both shoulders at one time.

So? It's called hyperextension (or "double-jointed" to some). I was born with it and can dislocate my shoulders, hyperextend my scapulae, fingers, etc...It's relatively common, not "insane." :p

As for Blaine... 2 minutes off his mark? Obviously he planned this. He wouldn't be THAT far off the 9 minute mark if he hadn't wanted to be - if that was the case, he wouldn't have said 9 minutes. He still must be breaking some sort of record...right?

I was living in London during the time he did his stunt where he was living in a plastic box suspended above the Thames near Tower Bridge. I stopped by to see the whole thing a couple times, and my understanding was he was in the box for the entire duration of the trick (30 days or something?) and was allowed water but no food.

It was very strange to say the least. He would lie motionless for several minutes at a time, then would suddenly spring to life and start waving at all the people there watching.

And about the stay under water thing, I heard some ppl can stay underwater for hours. The trick is to slow down your metabolism...

Ah, I had to leave early...so he didn't make 9 minutes? They had said the previous record was 8:58, which I did not know...I didn't think it possible for a human to hold their breath that long. Even 7:08 is damn impressive...I wonder if anybody today can match that? Too bad...even though he's not very well liked around here, I like how he tries news things, even if they are done up a bit too over the top.
