Dave Matthews Speaks Out About the War

While Matthews should stick to creating imagery in front of a mic he makes valid points. There will be consequences for an Iraqi invasion and Bush hasn't been honest with us about it. There is little to no talk of what will happen after the conquest. Would disclosing that information also compromise national security? I don't believe there is an exit strategy to this one. There is to be a permanent Western...influence in Iraq for perpetuity. After all, can the West allow...the Iraqi people to ever become threatened again? I don't think so.

It is truly about oil in part though you can argue the weight of that part of the equation. I wouldn't go so far as Moonbeam did a couple of posts ago but to deny it is foolish.

If folks enlist in the U.S. armed forces, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that they don't expect to be picking daisies all day.

Seriously, I think there's pretty strong support for the Bush administration within the military, and most seem quite confident (as they should) that our amazing air/ground superiority will minimize U.S. casualties. Heck, going strictly by the numbers, we probably lose more soldiers in random helicopter crashes and training accidents than we ever did in the Gulf War (148). If you want to feel sorry for a soldier, pray to your deity of choice for the poor Iraqi cannon-fodder who will most likely be stuck in the middle. Last time around, those poor slobs fell over themselves surrendering, yet they still lost over 100,000.

PS, I really kick myself every time I let myself get caught up in a political or religious debate on ATOT! 🙂 Time to start hanging out in Hot Deals again...

ok... scratch away, but I refer to the resolution going through congress to reinstate the draft. It's not a matter of voluntary service, it's one of forced conscription.

Hmm, I don't see a date for this letter, am I missing it?

I can't tell if Matthews wrote this in response to when the Clinton administration was advocating that Hussein be removed by military action or to the Bush adminstration advocating that Hussein be removed by military action.

If it is that latter, it only begs the question, where can I find a copy of the open letter he wrote opposing the war and calling it 'un-American' when Clinton was talking of removing Hussein?
