::golfclap:: way to generalize! I think you'll find there are a ton of people who don't partake in marijuana who think DMB is a group of fantastic musicians and that Dave is a top-notch songwriter.

John Mayer doesn't do drugs and his lyrics are the better for it.
Cute... and you know this how? Because John Mayer says he doesn't do drugs? Mmmm hmmm... and sweet Britney Spears is a virgin 'til her wedding day! And I think you and I might have different definitions of what drugs are. You only consider substances illegal in this country to be drugs, whereas I use the actual definition.

And John Mayer's lyrics aren't better, unless your idea of better is "describing actual people and events in concrete, methodical terms". Use of metaphor and poetic devices is a hallmark of good writing, be it lyrical or prose. Just because you can't directly relate your mundane life to it doesn't mean it's not meaningful. It just means it requires some effort, which most often pays off handsomely.

I personally think John is a better guitar player, but whatever.

Too bad for Dave, someone stole his gig and does it better.
Hardly. You might be surprised to know that John Mayer has specifically stated that he considers Dave Matthews to be one of his musical inspirations. I highly doubt he would say he does Dave's gig better than Dave. Let him release a string of platinum albums over ten years' time and then we'll see.
