This is based on the false idea that teaching hard skills turns kids in robots, which couldn't be further from the truth. The best way to teach people how to think it to teach them the basics: science, math, grammar, etc. We live in a complex world (relative to what our monkey brains evolved for) and you need to be able to structure your thinking to deal with it.
Of course when teaching these subjects there should be a lot of emphasis on the "why" and not just rote-learning.

Pretty much my take on teaching religious bullshit in science class. Guess which group is infamous for this? Hint: it's not your dreadful "progressives."
Anyone ever heard of that "yoga" town out West? The one where everyone is a vegetarian and they have meditation and yoga breaks throughout the day?
Now I have to go find it, pretty interesting story...

A classic illustration of how unthinking partisans irrationally use any problem or failure to attack their enemies. Simply pick a bad example of something and then use it to paint with broad brush-strokes, receiving adulation from others similarly unable to look at the big picture.
There are thousands of progressive schools in the country that do an excellent job of educating kids -- especially kids that the mainstream educational system fails. Blaming "progressives" in general because of one poorly-designed school is idiotic.

The "Dat whatchoo git" saying brings to mind another saying that I've carried with me for 23 years. I had a roommate in Army Basic Training named Greg. Very southern dude with a thick Alabama accent - so thick, it was almost caricaturish.
He would often do things that would get him in trouble. Once, during a room inspection, he hid in his wall locker rather than next to his bunk. And every time he got in trouble, he accepted whatever punishment was dished out by the drill sergeants.
I remember one time that several of the roommates (there were 8 of us in our room) were arguing and making excuses about something that didn't get done and had invoked the anger of the drill sergeants. Greg, who had stayed out of the argument up until this point, looked up and said, "Who fault dat be? Nobody fault but ya own."
Who would have expected such wisdom about personal responsibility from a serial troublemaker? "Who fault dat be?" has become one of my go-to favorites. Perhaps I will start pairing it up with this new saying: "Who fault dat be? Dat whatchoo git."

I completely agree with you, teaching religion and other non-science junk in sciences classes is stupid and should not happen.
Next time, try to actually read my post if you're going to comment on it instead of just jumping to conclusions.

Sorry, but as a simple matter of logic, when a thread is castigating a group and you post talking about "idiots" doing this or that without any qualifications, it is only natural for people to believe you are talking about the group in question.
If you really didn't mean progressives, you should have been more clear. And if you didn't, then whom did you mean?
Reading is fundamental. It's spelled out very clearly in my post: "I don't mind the idiots that want to foist the stupidity on their own children, what bothers me is when they want to foist stupidity on other children as well."
Clearly, my issue is with idiots that foist their stupidity on others. Unless you assume that only progressives can be idiots that foist their stupidity on others, no particular ideology was singled out.

There are faults to your reasoning in that, but I am not going to get into the slam on you alone.
The problem is simple. Even Progressives are human and make mistakes. Putting your kid into a school and expecting them to learn everything there is irresponsible. As parents, YOU should be reading to your kid and trying to help them learn as well.
What we have here is a swing too far in another direction, just like forcing kids to memorize things and follow the strait and narrow on the ironic "three R's", putting them in a free-form school with no real structure (and little motivation for such from the parents) is also a poor representation of what is needed.
The only thing I am curious about, which I will not read about in an attack article from the NYP, is what is the INTENDED curriculum at this school? Is this really a failure of the school, or a combined failure of parent and school?
No matter what school you go to, there are some kids that WANT to learn and will no matter what. Giving them better tools to do so will help them, but those that do not want to learn will have a hard time anywhere.
Especially at a "free form" academy.

Even if those kids can't read you'd have to think that they learn to paint really well at that school.
What is the purpose and meaning of life. You must think it has something to do with being able to read. A huge portion of the chimpanzee entrusted in your keeping has nothing at all to do with reading. There is a real and huge issue with the fact that education is irrelevant to children, that the form it comes in stifles our natural desire for knowledge, that it just creates little empty and sad robotic tools. A great number of people who know this are in search of alternatives that nurture something deeper in children. Because we live in an age of enormous ignorance as to our real psychological natures, we have a long way to go, and much experimentation to find better ways. You can ridicule this experiment and it may fail, but that won't change the fact that traditional education is also failing.

Sorry you can't read. Again, that doesn't speak highly of the school where you got the diploma. It's crystal clear. The problem you're having is that you jumped to conclusions not supported by evidence and now have an ego too big to just say "yes, I was wrong, I jumped to that conclusion".
