But if he wanted to be a community organizer, I'd still be just as proud of him, as long as he was happy.
Or as long as he was good at it. Shitty community organizer = you're out of the will.

The easiest thing to do is practice with the kid. I found that doing things like calculating mileage for my car or tips in my head are the easiest way to APPLY base mathematics.

It is amazing what you forget when you start to rely on calculators.
I still remember that 1/7 is roughly 0.14 because 7% was the sales tax rate when I was a kid so you'd pay 2 cents tax instead of 1 cent tax when buying an item that costs 15 cents instead of 14 cents.

PG, you meant Liberal Progressives, just own up and stand by it.

There are faults to your reasoning in that, but I am not going to get into the slam on you alone.

The problem is simple. Even Progressives are human and make mistakes. Putting your kid into a school and expecting them to learn everything there is irresponsible. As parents, YOU should be reading to your kid and trying to help them learn as well.

What we have here is a swing too far in another direction, just like forcing kids to memorize things and follow the strait and narrow on the ironic "three R's", putting them in a free-form school with no real structure (and little motivation for such from the parents) is also a poor representation of what is needed.

The only thing I am curious about, which I will not read about in an attack article from the NYP, is what is the INTENDED curriculum at this school? Is this really a failure of the school, or a combined failure of parent and school?

No matter what school you go to, there are some kids that WANT to learn and will no matter what. Giving them better tools to do so will help them, but those that do not want to learn will have a hard time anywhere.

Especially at a "free form" academy.
oh you're one of those guys who thinks the book has a different meaning than what the writer wrote? Just accept that you may be wrong and move along, who cares what his motives are? they are clearly indiscernible from the post what he meant. sure if you want to apply your assumptions of context.

other than that lols this is some silly shit. fucking retards. 32k too? WOWSA! in less than two years these people will be eating up tax dollars with their law suit against the school. i hope at that time the judge throws it out and tells them to settle it on their "peace bench".
