Dang its hot in here!!

I have discovered the one misgiving of a Dual Athlon MP system.. in the nicest part of the year when its too hot for heat and too cool for Air Conditioning.. you get roasted by this towering inferno sitting near you. Had to open the window, turn on the ceiling fan, open the case to keep it comfortable in here. And Im using dual Delta 7000 rpm processor fans and a bunch of case fans... so now now the pleasant wailing of all these nice coolers is complemented by enormous volumes of heat...

Cant wait for it to get over 85 so I can cool down the house!

Maybe I should just wear shorts?

BTW its 80 degrees outside... a tad warm for April

Are Intel dual systems this warm?

Yep it took me a while to figure it out but a few summers ago I realized that a computer can really cook a room and make a huge difference in heat 🙁

I hear ya.. I once made the mistake of leaving it running all night in this small office with the door closed.. thought the paint was gonna come off the walls..

Are you oc'ing ? and what have you got for a case? I've never had that problem here .I do use AC in the summer but it doesn't go in t5ill Memorial Day

No, not ocing at all, They are on a Thunder K7, cant oc with this board. Im using a SuperMicro 750 full tower, 3 80 MM in front, 120 in rear plus the twin PSU fans. Lots of case vents and a few HDD coolers. My main SCSI drives are in a separate raid enclosure.

hmmmm... your heatsiinks making good contact ?

Yes, I believe so, I just reapplied ASG on them when I installed this board a couple weeks ago. No temp problems till today. But its 10 degrees warmer than usual outside today.

I can't even imagine what it's like to have a computer w/o a fan (iMac?) and complete silence!

Panflo's are nice and quiet 🙂

I know the feeling... my TBird 800 with a modified Alpha HS and dual fans warms up my room considerably. I've even got it in a Coolermaster ATC 210 and if I don't have a fan circulating air within the room, it gets unbearably warm

It wouldnt really make a great diff to me to have a silent PC, as the dual hotswap power supplies on my raid tower are pretty darned noisy in themselves.

I just really enjoy this dual Athlon system...first AMD system I can say I have enjoyed having. But yes it would be so nice to have a lot fewer fans ripping away to keep it cool.

IS water cooling any more quiet, or does the cooler setup make as much noise.

My dual XP 1800+ system has been up & running all but 10 hours or so of the last 6 weeks. No heat problems here.

But it runs Seti like a biatch.

🙂

<< 911paramedic, Sheesh, and I thought it was warm here.. :Q >>

I am afraid it is going to be really hot this summer too. We have been lucky the last couple of years, hardly got over 110.

"why don't they just build this place on the sun??" forgot the movie title 😱

Viper, I lived in Oregon for about 2 months.. you should NEVER have temp problems up there.. 🙂

Paramedic, it gets quite warm here in the summer too.. but not like that..more like 105 daily average. Id have to install an AC unit on my puter box Im afraid!

LMAO! 🙂 Aint it the truth!

<< Mechanic moving. For sale 3 bedroom home. Heating by AMD. >>

Two of these systems and no force gas heating necessary.. 🙂

It shouldnt be a big difference. Keeping all other things equal, the dual AMD processors use (at a guess, you didnt give me model numbers) 60W of power each. So, 60+60=120. Keep in mind, you then have to subtract how much an Intel CPU draws. Its been a while since I had a look at P4 power consumption, and I havent looked at Zeon power consumption ever, but at the same clock speed and manufacturing process, the Zeon should be higher, due to a bigger cache. Anyway, IIRC, a 2.0 Willy puts out about 60Watts (remember, Intel CPUs run cooler, but the power draw is fairly close in between the P4 (at least the Willy; Northwood should be drawing a lot less juice) and the Athlon). Lets assume we are talking about a Zeon on the .13 micron process, so call it 40W (which is a guesstimate, but it should be accurate enough for demonstration purposes). So, really, the difference is 60W+60W-40W-40W=40W. My lamp puts out more heat than that (150 Watt halogen bulb), and it doesnt seem to warm up the room. I'm in a dorm, too, so its not like the room is large, on the contrary, its d@mn small. An average light bulb is 60W. From the rest of your posts in this thread, it sounds like you have quite a large rig (redundant PSUs, for example), so the percent difference of heat output shouldnt be huge going from AMD to Intel CPUs.

On the subject of fans, adding bigger faster fans will heat the room more, not less, though by an admittedly small amount, the amount being the difference in power draw from your original fan to the new one. Your CPU's output a finite amount of heat. A bigger/faster fan will keep the CPUs closer to room temperature, but they do not lower the amount of heat introduced by the CPUs.

My original intent was to get a dual P4 Xeon system, I had the processors but the darned boards were too expensive so I went with the Athlon. Im sure two of them would have put out quite a bit of heat. And yes the twin 300 watt power supplies on the raid tower are surely contributing to this.. Ive only had them going a couple days. Its all neatly packed under my desk which I am sure contributes to the overall effect as well. My puter room is only about 12x12 too. It just seems like a major undertaking to keep it all reasonably cool and the room as well. Its the price of having too much in little home project.. 🙂

Hahaha you are sooo slick !!! nice way to brag about your rig, I'm sure lottsa folks are sitting here wearing their 😛 faces reading all of this 🙂

If I didnt trade on the forums I wouldnt have any of this.. 🙂 My AMD system complete was less expensive than those two P4 Xeons by themselves
